I recently pulled out Kingdom Hearts to try again, but I hate the controls so much I just couldn't do it (why couldn't they make the right joystick control the camera? Too logical?).

Actually they did that for Kingdom Hearts 2 and the PS2 version of Chain of Memories.

IGN's "Top 25 PS2 Games of All Time" list is, IMO, a pretty good place to start in terms of figuring out which games to buy for the system, and covers a fairly broad range of genres. Of games not on that list and that haven't been mentioned yet, I'd personally reccommend 007: From Russia with Love, Grandia III, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Rogue Galaxy, Star Wars Battlefront II, Oni, and The Mark of Kri.

I don't buy the IGN list as a whole, however, that doesn't disqualify all of the games that are on there.

That aside, I personally recommend all of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms offerings on the PS2(that is VII to XI), but the best one out of the bunch is X in my opinion. It offers the right amount of RPG and strategy and it feels like you are actually in the history books.

Another Strategy game that I recommend is Nobunaga's Ambition(Rise to Power or Iron Triangle).

If you are into Anime and/or fast-paced Mech combat at all, I would like to mention Zone of the Enders and ZoE: The Second Runner.
