The best ever televised concert?

U2 broadcast their ZooTV Tour from Australia. That was pay-per-view though, so I don't know if that counts.

In any event, it was the best concert I ever saw on TV. It was also the best concert I ever saw live.

Robin Williams Live at Knebworth (DVD is titled What we did last summer)

A brilliant and entertaining performance with some standout moments (i still love the moment where he pulls a decent looking woman on stage during "Come undone" and she uses the moment boldly to grab his ass and have a long kiss.. and Robbie plays along by grabbing her tits and planting a long kiss on her too :lol:)

And the crowd is just amazing.. all for a single person.

Doesn't sound like standup comedy. Is this a different Robin Williams?

He means Robbie Williams, formerly of Take That.

If we're going strictly by televised concerts, I would go Live Aid first, with the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert a close second. Live Aid was a pretty amazing event, simulcast, artists playing both in London and in Philly...it was pretty awesome. The Mercury concert was just amazing.

Unfortunately, tv broadcasts of concerts (like McCartney's recent City Field broadcast), can't be held in the same category.. It is just a "highlights/best of" concert and you just can't rate a 1-hour segment of a nearly 3 hour concert anywhere in the same continent as a complete televised concert. It was just a tv promo of the DVD set, for all intents and purposes (and the CD/DVD sets are great!).

A vote for Simon and Garfunkel's Concert in Central Park:

Totally spaced that one. definitely good stuff. In fact, I'm changing my vote to this instead of the Fleetwood Mac concert I brought-up earlier.

One of my favotite songs from this concert is A Heart in New York.

Here's a clip of it (though not from the Central Park concert): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nvrkebBbBM&feature=related

I've never been to NYC, but I get the impression that this song is reflective of the place. In the first few days after 9/11 I just couldn't get this piece of music out of my head.

Finally, a mention of something I've actually seen!

I don't care for what's been passing as rock music for most of the past 30 years or so, so I've not seen the other stuff mentioned in this thread.

My vote would go to "Yanni: Live At the Acropolis." I was utterly mesmerized by the unparalleled talent shown by that international group of musicians, and the "dueling violins" and drum solo would have been worth the price of admission alone!

My second vote would be for the closing ceremonies of the Barcelona Olympics. That was an amazing and wonderful show the people of Spain put on! :techman:

S&G Concert/Central Park was great, Live Aid was great but I saw Yanni Live from the Kremlin and I thought it blew away Acropolis(which was a heck of a show in itself).

When was the Kremlin concert? The last one I saw was when he was at the Hidden City and the Taj Mahal.

Is Yanni known for staging concerts in really exotic locations?
To some extent, yes, but it's more that Yanni is very much an international sort of composer/musician. His own orchestra is comprised of supremely talented people from many countries, and the same is true of the guest artists who appear in his concerts. Yanni believes that music is a truly universal language that can bring humankind together in peace and that in that spirit, we can seek a common future without all this petty "my country is better than yours" stuff that has held us back for so long. During his Acropolis concert he made a point of saying to the audience that from space, you can't see the lines on the ground that we see on a map - they don't really exist. We are all one people.

The Acropolis concert was very special to him, since he was born and raised in Greece. :)
