The Best and the Worst of It All to Date

Kate Nichols

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Well, to date, I have seen most of Season 1, most of Season 6 and most of Season 7.

To date, the very worst episode that I have seen is Q-Less, too bad since usually Q is great, but that off-putting, boring and self-absorbed Vash girl affected the whole episode and not in a good way. I also thought the episode where Miles was missing on Ezri's planet was kind of weak, too, though there were interesting moments with Ezri and her relationship with her family.
As for the good episodes, most of them. I liked the one where Cisco is speaking to the camera talking about his decepetion to get the Romulans into the war. I liked the one where Nog lost his leg and spent all his time in Vic's Place. By the way, I have loved all Vic episodes thus far except for the one where the mob took over his nightclub. I also loved "His Way," though some put in down. I thought it tres romantic.

I'm not skipping them. I'm getting to them. I watch an episode or two a day sometimes, but sometimes I'm busy. I happened to catch an episode on TV about a month or so ago.I couldn't believe how good it was, so after seeing another few episodes, I researched it online and heard about the episode where Kira and Odo kiss, so I had to skip to that that episode and watch it. I liked it, so got into Season 6 and then Season 7.`

Is it not on Netflix in your country? If not, why not buy it on Prime Video or pick up some cheap DVDs on eBay?

Sorry if I'm not really responding to your original post, but it really is a series best viewed in order!

To rectify this: Yes, the Q episode was terrible. One of my favorite things about DS9 is that they were generally very willing to make changes when things weren't working. Instead of having another crack at a Q episode, they just moved on.

I don’t like Q-less. It seemed very on the nose in trying to revel in TNG’s success while highlighting how it is different.

“Picard never hit me!”
“I’m not Picard.”

Totally on the nose. At that point DS9 had not really figured out how it was unique.

I thought it was on the chin ;)

DS9 was unique the moment it premiered. There was nothing like it on syndicated TV.

I've grown to hate Q-Less over the years. It was repetitive, and Q was better than that. This felt like first season TNG Q, and even then he was better then what we saw in Q-Less. Heck, Q wasn't even the big thing about that episode. He was a side character. Also they wasted Vash.

In my re-watch, I'm currently in the beginning of S5. S4 was the best one so far, with a lot of great episodes and few lapses. However at the same time I'm still disappointed by the lack of good character stuff. Quark is still mostly reduced to "I'm so greedy and I exploit everyone hah hah", there's little Odo/Quark chemistry to speak of, and with Worf's arrival, Kira has almost disappeared. S1 was much better at this. Garak isn't as good as he used to be either.

I'm also annoyed by the super-stereotypical handling of Worf. iirc it gets better in later seasons, but right now almost all he says is something about this or that is not honourable and something about singing songs blah blah. Seriously? Can't you do anything with him but repeat the most superficial and worn out Klingon stereotypes?

I kinda like how DS9 took those stereotypes and used them more for laughs, but the 'honourable' thing does get really annoying.

TBF, not quite as bad as the need for every Vulcan to say 'logical' at least three times per scene.

I like Worf but sometimes in DS9 he became unbearable with the amount of times he mentioned duty and honour. When he was on Risa - still in uniform - I wanted to scream! I thought the Klingons became a parody of themselves in later seasons and were too much.

It seemed that the writers had a cue card for each species, oh a Klingon, let’s mention blood oaths, the 2309 blood wine and discuss an honourable way to get to Sto’vokor.
Ferengi - If one didn’t mention gold pressed latinum or the rules of acquisition, we were missing something!

Season 6, episode 24: Time’s Orphan.

The worst of the worst.

I’m watching DS9 for the first time and just finished this one. I found it enormously painful and my husband just laughed through most of it.

The ending...awful.

I’ll never watch this episode again.

Best, for me was the Arc involving the Circle and the powerful episodes where they left DS9 to the Dominion.

Worst - Move Along Home, by a Country mile.
