"The Begotten"

I just watched this episode last night. I must say that it's probably my favorite of season five so far. It is definitely my favorite Odo episode so far too. It was really cool to see this side of Odo. He seemed sooo human in this one. I loved it when he was celebrating, pouring drinks and talking to Quark about how the baby changeling had changed his life/perspective. It was just cool to see Odo so giddy about something. I also really loved the dynamic between Odo and Dr. Mora in this one. It was fascinating when Odo realized that his techniques weren't going to yield results so he finally accepts Dr. Mora's input, and they start seeing results immediately. Odo finally begins to understand that Dr. Mora wasn't trying to torture him. He was just helping him realize his potential. This seemed to signify a huge shift in dynamic between these two, and also have a large impact on Odo's interpretation of Dr. Mora and his motives. Great stuff. Their relationship is a prime example of why I love this show. There are complexities and layers to relationships between characters that goes much deeper than any other Trek series. It was great to get some more back story/details about Odo/Dr. Mora. I hope to see more of them together. At the risk of sounding like a wuss, I almost got a little choked up at the end when Odo finally thanked Dr. Mora. Really great writing in this episode. Oh, and of course there's the big twist at the end that I was glad to see happen. All around, a great episode that in my mind embodies what is right about DS9.

it's a top episode, I really enjoyed it too, and you're right it does show a different side to Odo than what we've come to expect - the only thing I didn't enjoy is yet another mention of a Tarkalean Hawk! I guess we got to see it at least in this episode.

I agree, The Begotten is a great episode, at least for the Odo A-plot (I can't stand the Kira-gives-birth B-plot, but that can be fixed by fast-forwarding 100% of the B-plot). I'm surprised that The Begotten rarely gets discussed.

There are also some great Odo-centric episodes before The Begotten, such as Vortex (Vortex is not as good as the others but still very good on its own merits), Necessary Evil, Shadowplay, and most especially Crossfire. Have you seen those ones, Lrrr? If so, what do you think of them? If not, I highly recommend them for your viewing pleasures. :techman:

I really liked "Necessary Evil". I like how it added to Odo's back story and showed how he became "The Constable" on Tarak Nor (sp?). I also liked "Shadow Play" a lot. I thought the holographic village was an interesting twist. I wasn't a huge fan of Odo in "Crossfire" however. To me, it came off as a "sad Odo doesn't get the girl" meme. I mean, it was a good episode, but Odo is sometimes too stubborn for his own good. I will say though that as the series goes on, I'm liking Odo more and more. He really does have a lot of depth.
