Look at Doctor Who, that's sci fi space stuff.

They make it on a budget they have to justify to the British license fee payer, but they can also team up with big networks to pump in extra cash (look at the nature docs, torchwood and stuff).

They make a huge profit selling it across the globe.

Would be perfect saturday tea time, 8-13 episodes stuff.

Not sure I would mention TW, given the disaster that was "Miracle Day".

But I'm not sure that ST has enough mainstream appeal in the UK, true I think TNG hit a peak audiance of some 5-6m viewers when it was shown on BBC2 on Wednesday's at 18:00 in the early ninties (before Sky took over) which isn't a bad number given the time. In some respects Sky might be a better home for it as a co-production with a US network.

But leaving aside any co-production different resulkt might be achieved by filiming in a different location other than LA such as Canada or the UK. Farscape for example was filmed in Australia.

The BBC has a history of doing very high quality Costume Dramas and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre is world-reknown, so ... I would have absolutely no issue, whatsoever, seeing the BBC getting involved in the STAR TREK franchise. Hell, I think they should! As people have pointed out with Doctor Who, the series is fantastic, even though it wasn't always so, apparently. But they didn't have the money, before. Properly funded, I would trust the BBC to deliver a STAR TREK here-to-fore unparallelled in the franchise's history.

The BBC does seem a little more willing to do sci-fi than most American networks, so I'd my fine with it. However, my preference is HBO for the next Star Trek series. It'll never happen, but that's where I want future Trek.

"Downton Abbey" is a sorta "update" of "Upstairs Downstairs".

I never said there was. But the BBC is very genre friendly and given the success of Doctor Who (and spinoffs) I could see them going with a space opera given the right pitch.

Right now? One. 'In the Flesh'. Doctor Who doesn't return for a few more months.

Personally i'd say no. 'Doctor Who' plays to our strengths and culture, that's why it works. And 'Star Trek' is very much an American expression of their culture.

And in the past, attempts to do joint productions resulted in the 1996 Doctor Who tv movie that almost saw David Hasselhoff in the role, and more recently, Torchwood: Miracle Day, which was a massive letdown after the stellar Torchwood: Children of Earth.
