I'm hearing on twitter that WB's new new new direction for DC has a lot to do with The Batman's performance versus the latest Spider-Man movie.

Are they not aimed at different audiences, though?
To be fair, that might be part of the problem in WB's eyes. However, No Way Home was the third Holland Spidey solo movie, while this was the first film of the new Batman movie series. The closest comparison possible would be to Homecoming, which earned more internationally, but was beaten by the new Batman domestically, and that's without this version of Batman being introduced in another popular movie beforehand, and with the whole pandemic situation, which especially in China made a gigantic difference.

Danger Mouse?…I liked Duckula better…

Danger Force is sequel to Henry Danger.

Duckula for me too. It's the one I'd rewatch today.

How could they even compare the two? Considering what the latest Spiderman gave us.... How do you compete with that? How would anyone?

Another vote for Duckula! That show was awesome.

Executives know best! Don't question their sound reasoning!

:guffaw:

Don't believe everything you hear on social media. If they were really trying to compete with NWH box office ,they wouldn't have it available on HBO Max so soon after release.

Part 2 of my review.

I really liked this being Year 2 - he's got a rep, he's got some experience, but he's still new at this. I liked it actually being a detective story. I liked Gotham being dirty, dingy, and corrupt (and having a Times Square!). I liked that they brought in the Falcone-Maroni rivalry.

I liked that I could tell that Gordon trusts Bats more than half (or more) of his fellow cops, so he breaks the rules for Batman. Martinez was a good example of how to use a minor character to show changes in attitudes over the course of the film. I disagree with those who said Gordon did little - without him, Batman wouldn't have had access to the crime scenes or evidence.

Turturro did a terrific job as the seemingly-sensible crime boss who's actually a psycho. I think he scared me more than the Riddler!

I appreciated that someone (Reeves?) really thought about Bruce's psychology. I very much bought that PTSD made him both a recluse and focused on vengeance. I also appreciated a Batman who looks more like a swimmer than a weightlifter, perhaps because I grew up with Aparo, Adams, and Giordano. :)

Can I squeal over the car? I think I actually did in the theater!

Then there's Catwoman. Wow. Someone commented on IMDB that "Selina Kyle uses the pet names 'honey' and 'baby' throughout the movie. When she doesn't trust people, Selina uses 'honey', but she doesn't mean anything by that name. She is using 'baby' when she trusts people and deeply cares about them." I hadn't caught that one, but little touches like that and the claw nails and boots-with-heels as Selina and sensible motorcycle boots as Catwoman and... yeah. Zoe blew me away.

I really liked the Bat and Cat relationship here too (I could almost feel Tom King gloating!). They don't know each other at the start but have mutual interests. He's attracted instantly to her, but she merely finds him useful. When she kissed him... I wondered if he'd ever been kissed and realized he had not. They gradually learn to like and trust each other, but they both know they aren't ready for more. Great chemistry between Pattinson & Kravitz too - apparently they've been friends for years.

I had no problem with the 3rd act. Cascading (pun intended) "oh shit" moments worked well for ratcheting up my tension.

I LOVED the character growth as Bruce realized that fear isn't enough. I look forward to seeing him (re)boot the Wayne Foundation in future films, as well as learning how to balance the 2 sides of The Batman.

Neither my hubby nor I found any real plot holes. I was glued to my seat for the whole runtime too.

ETA: This may be the first film score I buy since the 1989 Batman.

I can't wait to see it again on HBO Max this weekend!

Okay. On HBO max now.
Okay.. Good, overly long though. I'd place this as #6 maybe.. Behind bale and keaton. Maybe behind Affleck. But real glad for a Detective story!
Riddler was well written and was scary..
Music sucked thou.
Really got tired of ave Maria after 5 seconds.

If this movie came out in time, it would have given Dune a run for its money for some of the technical categories. Cinematography, sound editing/mixing, editing...

Finally caught it now and it is a very good movie, not yet decided if it's better than Dark Knight, which to me is the pinnacle of movie Batman.

The movie works due to the story and cinematography - this one they knocked it out of the park. Pattinson is good in his role but as written it doesn't give him much range other than "Look brooding" or "Be menacing" - i hope they expand on this in following movies and give him more possibilities to really act because i always really liked the duality of the character - charming playboy at day, terror of criminals by night. However he and Zoe had very good chemistry, i liked her character arc and especially that whole end scene of them on their bikes and then going separate ways - a bit on the nose with the symbology but i still liked it.
As good of an actor as Pattinson turned out to be ( good for him to challenge himself post Twillight to bury that role and expand his range) Paul Dano took over the movie once we actually got to see him. He's all of 10 minutes or so in the movie but man did he make these 10 minutes his own - i actually got a bit frightened to see someone so heavily damaged and deranged, brilliant performance. I don't know if it worked better to have him concentrate on this short time or if it would be even better if we saw more of him but he give's Ledger's Joker a run for his money when it comes to best comicbook villain ( and i considered his Joker to be the best by a very long shot, the best MCU villains don't come close to that).

On to the real star - the cinematography. That is one movie that perfectly captures the mood of the story and crafts visuals around it, i was really impressed. Especially near the end when Bruce drops down in the water and lights the red torch - what a gorgeous shot.

I also loved how they have shown an imperfect Batman, who makes mistakes. The botched landing after the escape from the precinct ( btw. kudos for sticking to realism by using a wingsuit) that nearly kills him and Riddler always being one step ahead were nice touches to humanize the character, as well as the feel of realism throughout the movie ( within certain limits of course, it's still a comicbook movie).

A very solid B+ or A-, definitely looking forward to the next movie.
