Hard disagree and I say that as a huge fan of The Dark Knight.

Batman's rogue gallery is extensive enough that there's no reason a run of films can't create engaging stories without the Joker appearing once.

You're thinking as a comicbook fan. Most movie-watching people know Batman from the movies and the cartoons, NOT the comics. So yeah, Joker is as much part of Batman for the average viewer as the Baterang and Batmobile is. Rogue's Gallery means two things for them; f*%& and all. So yeah, when a new Batman movie is made, they'll think 'Joker when?'.

Do I agree with you? Yes. Does the average movie watcher do? Nope.

For the movies alone? I suppose so but it's just going to be repetitive if that narrow focus is kept.

But you included the cartoons. Each one of them has focused on the wide range of villains of the rogue's gallery. Does it focus heavily on Joker? Sure, but plenty of others are seen repeatedly and given a chance to shine.

Zsasz is the villain that fits this continuity best. Some recent comics suggest that one of the reasons for the revolving door is the wealthy—and that’s how Court of Owls is introduced. First comes the Joker, however…after he is dealt with, The Batman finds himself in Arkham…no cowl…just Bruce and Mr. Zsasz and some others in a breakout.

Fair point. I do wonder how many people that watch the movies also watched the cartoons.
I do, by the way, agree with you that the big focus on the Joker is getting a bit heavy handed. I wouldn't mind seeing other villians show up. I think it was over 20 years ago that there were some heavy rumors of Patrick Stewart playing Mr. Freeze. That could have been really interesting.

Let's banish that POS show and anything from it (the Batmobile was the only thing good about it) to the distant past like it should've been a long time ago.

Just wading into this conversation after looking at a few of the recent posts. I loved Batman '66. It was one of my first introductions to Batman and his world. I think entertainment is big enough for Batman '66 and The Batman to coexist. That's part of the longevity of the character that he works as well in Batman '66 or Batman: The Brave & The Bold as he does in The Batman or Batman: TAS.

I think Zsasz would definitely be a good fit for Reeves' Batman films, though I think he would be too redundant to the Riddler. The Court of Owls would be great.

Others that I see working:
Scarecrow (though he might be too much like Riddler or the Dark Knight Scarecrow)
Anarky (though he might also be too much like Riddler)
Firefly (if they weren't already using him for the Batgirl movie)
Talia
Two-Face
Bane
Great White Shark
Black Mask
Dr. Death
Professor Pyg
Dollmaker
Black Spider
Other gangsters and crime families in Gotham (Maroni, Zucco, Rupert Thorne, the other Falcones) and Penguin.

No, thanks. I find having multiple types of Batman quite enjoyable. Let Batman 66 live alongside Burton's Batman, Bale's Batman and The Batman, among many others.

The comics have certainly done so. Why not films?

Going over it again, I kind of wish that instead of Joker being the guy at the Asylum who we see hints off....they'd use Hugo Strange.

Or would that have been even more of a "Red Dragon"/"Silence of the Lambs" thing?

Just nine more days before it's available on HBO Max.

The Dozier series has and continues to be considered its own thing having no bearing on the Bat-films of this century (thankfully) so I doubt any of Dozier's made-for-TV villains will ever appear in the main DCEU, or a Patt-Man sequel. The MCU has never made so direct a reference or inclusion of older era Marvel material (the 1966 Marvel Super Heroes' theme used as Muzak from Iron Man does not count) with the exception of the Norton Hulk's liberal borrowing from the main title sequence, pilot and I believe some dialogue from The Incredible Hulk TV series, but that's understandable, as the series was great.

Who is talking trash about the ‘66 show? Hopefully the mods ban that person immediately.

The Max thing is cool I suppose but I’d rather get the blu ray. It’s bad enough those Marvel films have those imax enhanced versions exclusively on Disney Plus.

Not from MCU , but still my favorite marvel reference in a movie...

I *loved* this movie! As someone who grew up with 70s Batman comics and has enjoyed most of the movies and all of the animated shows, I thought this was a perfect Year Two story. (I was very happy not to see those damn pearls again.)

Pattinson (who I'd only previously seen as Cedric Diggory) was a pleasant surprise. Dano was f*cking amazing - when he was revealed at the end as a "nebbish", it felt utterly right. Kravitz is now my ONLY Catwoman. Wright and Serkis were great as always. Turturro was *SO* CREEPY! And Farrell impressed me by managing to bring both menace and humor as an interesting version of Cobblepot.

More tomorrow.

I'm hearing on twitter that WB's new new new direction for DC has a lot to do with The Batman's performance versus the latest Spider-Man movie.

Are they not aimed at different audiences, though?
