Spoilers The Bastardization of Star Trek

I can't believe I seem to be alone on this. All of you really watched this stuff happen without a second thought? None of this bothers anyone? I knew there would be some detractors, but I assumed I'd have crowd support on this.

Come on, the entire basis of Star Trek is the concept of magic. What did Arthur C. Clarke say?

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

I'm sorry, but at present, we don't have intermix chambers and a way to utilize dilithium as a focusing agent to go faster than light. While experiments with transporting particles have yielded great success, we are a long way from transporting and reconstituting a complex pattern. In researching this post, there is some questionable evidence to suggest extraterrestrials exist (if you trust a random guest on FOX news).

That's the very basis of Star Trek and one can make the argument that much of this is magic and more science fantasy than science fiction. So, no, I have no issues with "that episode" showing a magical way of having our characters sing because it is, by far, not the most ridiculous idea in Star Trek. Not by a long shot.

It's these. Basically Marshmallows already stuffed with chocolate and are fun for snacking but I haven't done the s'mores things yet with them.

Ah, yes. I remember seeing those, now.

I've never tried them, but I don't think you can go wrong with a stuffed one for smores.

I mean, look at a donut and a stuffed donut. Krispy Kreme, for instance. (Kool-Aid man breaks through the wall...)

We had standard marshmallows but different chocolate bars - Reese, aero, cookies and cream, reg chocolate.

Wine drinker here...and I am absolutely maddened by the contradictions in Chateau Picard (long, technical rant removed to improve readibilty)

I don't like Discovery. I watched 3 seasons and decided I was never going to be engaged by the characters. So I stopped watching it. What's the point of watching something you don't like? LD is okay. Picard is uneven (and in my opinion went in the wrong direction after season 1). Haven't seen Prodigy and SNW yet. Not attracted by the thought of Section 31. Don't feel I'm missing anything. Why am I not missing anything? Because I have lots and lots of ST that I DO like.

Whinging about nu-Trek will alter neither nu-Trek or old-Trek. Discuss and debate the Treks, their good and bad points, their contradictions and irritations but don't lay down the law about what's right and wrong.

Take the latest SNW episode, a musical. I hate musicals, and it's an episode I will never watch again.
I haven't seen it yet. I'll see it soon. If anything, just so my brother stops asking me if I've seen it and what I think.

Last week was both a busy week and a bad week for me, IRL. I was just flat-out not in the mood. And I deeply suspect this is the type of episode I'd have to be in the mood for.

It's going to go one of four ways:
1. I'll think it's great and I'll love it.
2. I'll think it's horrible and I'll still love it.
3. I'll think it's not bad, but it isn't for me.
4. I'll think it's a flat-out horrible cringe-fest.

No idea where I'll land.

Definitely would be interested in seeing your thoughts on that episode's thread. I know that in the Saturday chat, another person didn't particularly like it (for reasons that I can understand) and he really likes musicals. I hate musicals... it's just not my genre.

I found it interesting that two people who have completely opposing views about musicals agree on not liking it. By the same token, I've seen people who don't like musicals really love it. So I can't even say that if you like musicals, you'll likely like this one.

Either way, if/when you do watch it, please share your thoughts on that thread.

For better or worse, I don't think anything about either Picard or Strange New Worlds (or the other Nu-Trek shows) are out of keeping with the greater tone of the Star Trek franchise as a whole. Even though I've had issues with the current season of SNW, I just don't see a "bastardization" of anything. I lived through seven seasons of Voyager doing warp 10 salamanders, space dinosaurs, and space wrestling with The Rock. So singing and dancing doesn't offend me that way.

It's ok for people to not like it. I realized at a certain point that I wasn't going to like Voyager and it was never going to be the show I wanted it to be. And I came to the same realization with Discovery. But I don't begrudge the people that enjoy those shows. We just like different approaches to Star Trek. And that's ok.

If there's an argument to be had about this, I think it basically boils down to how grounded people think a Star Trek story should be, and how grounded it should treat the elements within its fictional universe. Just because something has quasi-magical elements, doesn't mean anything goes if it doesn't fit how serious the show takes itself and its universe (e.g., Battlestar Galactica has as many "magic" elements as Star Trek, but I can't see Ron Moore ever deciding that a musical episode where Adama and Apollo sing their feelings about the Cylons would ever work for that show and what it was trying to do).

Funny enough, the one show I could see doing a musical episode too is the one that a lot of the fanboys that have a problem with SNW doing it have in the past anointed as the new "real" Star Trek .... The Orville ... since Seth McFarlane loves to inject a song and dance routine into his stuff.

I was actually thinking of DMing you to see what you think, just ‘cause sometimes I’ve asked you stuff before, it’s opened a can of worms and you’ve told me next time I should DM you instead.

Like Farscape, I’ll be interested to hear what you think.

The musical episode might make some people cringe but it’s never going to be “Plato’s stepchildren”.~~or the ‘allmarain’episode.

I know the incident you're talking about. A huge flame war would've erupted if I hadn't slammed the brakes on it. Totally different thing. I don't think that's going to happen in this case.

I will always defend "MOVE ALONG HOME".

1. You have a fantastic concept. Being inside a board/video game? How many of us have wanted to do exactly that.

2. You have real character development for Quark. This is the first episode where you see him as something other than a shady bartender. He shows he actually has a line that he won't cross... hurting/killing people. And his plea was so excellently done. Armin Shimerman completely shines here.

3. We get a rare look at a Gamma Quadrant race outside the Dominion. (Granted, this was before the Dominion was cooked up, but the point stands.) This illustrated, once again, how sophisticated technology is the dominant trait of that region. A big difference from the Delta Quadrant (again, before VOY was created, but point still stands), which for the most part was either not as advanced or equal to Federation technology.

4. Avery Brooks singing is always a treat.

5. The Wadi makeup may not have been inspired, but the costumes were very alive and colorful... almost game-like. Matches their love of games.

6. We get to see our Starfleet heroes use nothing but their wits and intelligence to solve their situation. This doesn't happen often enough... they are always using their technology to solve whatever crisis is going on.

7. This is more a personal view, but the hopscotch song is rather catchy. (Though I will agree the actual hopscotching can come across as ridiculous... but they are inside a game. Totally fits the narrative.)

Rascals too. Yes, it's a guilty pleasure of mine but there are a couple of scenes were it gets to cringe, especially with the whole "act like children" idea. Though Alexander does get his moment to shine.

"Rascals" truly made the crew look like idiots. A Galaxy class ship overrun by 2 way out of date Birds of Prey? I just can never get past that.

Though I will give the episode two marks in its favor... the child casting of the adults was spot on (particularly Picard and Guinan's counterparts), and Alexander coming off well here, as you mention.

Please don't take it as a complaint. I think you're a good guy and I just don't want to piss you off.
