The Ashes 2009

Sadly no hat trick. But Onions has given Fred something to compete with. He's at his best when set a bit of a challenge: another bowler doing better than he always brings out Fred's testosterone - as poor Clarke is discovering.

Planning mash and Onions gravy for tea tonight in his honour.

Good grief.

I am so irrationally mad at Hughes' axing.
Same here. The "reasoning" - if one can associate reason with so stupid a decision - is utterly ridiculous. If even one of the selectors stood up and admitted what's blindingly obvious - that they're covering for the possibility of another Johnson meltdown by picking someone who can't stay fit for more than five minutes and has hardly played a game all year - I could stomach it a bit better. The crap they're spouting instead is just insulting to all concerned. All they seem worried about is hauling Hughes over the coals for the Twitter rubbish. Great priorities there, people.
Ponting should take over from AB as our leading test runscorer. One more good home series and he'll easily have Tendulkar's all time record - maybe for a long time if the domination of 20/20 continues to crowd out real cricket from the schedule.
Now that meaningless Twenty20 fluff is seemingly the priority of so many, there are a few Test records that may be safe for a long time.

All rain is to be sent here, please.

Thank god Peter Willey doesn't play any more.

Punter takes the crown as Australia's #1 run scorer.

Anderson's upcoming spell looks critical. As long as we can see off Flintoff, and the suddenly extra-spicy Onions, I think we should be okay, but if Anderson can knock over Ponting, we're in strife.

Yeah, it's complete BS. I really feel for Hughes, he must be in a dark place right now. Hopefully he has some family over there. He seems a great kid. I hope he's had it clearly explained what's going on, and that it's not really his fault.

Hughes was dropped before the twitter error - he twittered his having been dropped. And his management team have admitted it was they who tweeted on his behalf, being too dumb to realise there's a time difference between the UK and Oz. Your selectors don't even have that as an excuse for their choices.

Oh, and there goes Ponting. Onion soup all week at this rate!

Australia on the ropes at 7/202.

Prior takes the catch of the series to get rid of North.

Anderson gets Johnson with a magic inswinger LBW, first ball.

The urn looks like changing hands again :(

203-8 at lunch! Wow, what a session. Only got radio commentary here at home - anyone who has it on the TV, are Aus throwing their wickets away?

Wow. 203-8. A productive morning for England. Onions and wee Jimmy getting the plaudits.

If we're looking for England to take over mid next session, I wonder how the ball will work against them?

That's exciting! I've been ignoring the test match this morning and didn't expect that at all. Gives England a bit of time now.

Hussey shouldered arms to a ball that was only ever goint to knock over off stump, but apart from that, Onions' opening spell, and Anderson's four rapid fire wickets before lunch were just due to first class swing bowling. We don't handle it well.

It could have been much worse too, Flintoff dropped a sitter off Onions to give Clarke a life, and also Clarke was given not out when he was plumb LBW to Onions.

God knows what the difference is compared to yesterday. There is talk the pitch is a tad quicker than yesterday, but the most obvious difference is Anderson and Onions bending it around at high pace.

Australia need a miracle from our bowlers this afternoon. This is a series deciding session coming up.

Well bowled to Anderson. It's taken nearly a decade, but I finally see what all the fuss was about with him - when it's swinging, he is a world beater.

Bopara's dropped catch was a shocker - some nice handy runs here for us. 250 might yet be respectable.

Looks a different wicket with us bowling on it.

England 1/56 at tea. Nobody looks like getting a wicket. Not a hint of swing.

Johnson ordinary again despite being demoted to first change.

I'm still not convinced about the England batting line up, but they're doing it easy so far.

When you think Australia were 126 for 1 at one point, I don't think England can gloat at 65 for 2. So much seems to depend on the weather. :(
