The Ash & Dead People

Mallet

So the ash can be used to keep the Smoke Monster out.

The question is where does this ash come from and why can it keep old Smokie out?

Well in the last episode we saw Allana(?) scoop up a lot of the ashes from where NotLocke dumped Jacobs body into the fire and where Jacob burned up.

Is it possible that the ash that keeps smokie at bay, is the ashes of dead past protectors of the Island?

Or can it be from the ashes of any dead person?

Remember the Other's, at least while Ben was in charge, burned their dead.

And back in1974 Richard made a big deal of collecting the body of the Dharma scientist killed by his people. What was he going to do with the body?

Is it possible that if you burn the body of a dead person on the island it prevents Smokie/The MIB from claiming the bodies "ghost" to use? And If you burn the body of a dead person can you use the ashes to keep Smokie at bay?

Why did, for that matter, Jacob turn to ash? If you throw a body on that small of fire, it would burn and unless the fire is stoked, would put out the fire!

It went to ash suspicously fast.

I have been suspicious of this as well.

That was kind of my thinking as well, but then again there was so much ash around the shack it couldnt have come from just one person.

Which also brings us to who was trapped by the ash in the shack, because Ben thought it was Jacob, but that means MIB was free all the time since we saw smokey before Jacob, but why would the people who worship Jacob trap him in there, and if they were following his orders it would have been easy enough to let him out.

What if it were MIB trapped in there, and smokey was Jacob, at least until the ring of ash was disturbed.

Then they took turns being smokey.

The other thing that comes to mind is, Jacob and MIB are not in their original bodies, because they acted like bringing someone to the island was something that happened over and over.

Maybe smoke/ash is their natural state, and every now and again they just each take the body of someone who died on the island, and their stalemate goes on.

Unless he's like Obi-Wan and disappeared when Vader killed him "if you strike me down I will be more powerful..." :D

 I kept mumbling that while watching the episode.

I'm more interested in how a sonic fence from the 70s keeps Smokey out. Whatever else Smokey may be, he certainly ain't all-powerful.
