The answer is in the new trailer!!!!

Ok, J.J. has given us a huge clue as to why some things are different. There are two very telling shots in the new superbowl trailer as to why things aren't quite right...that's all I'm sayin'. All of he sudden I love this movie!!! Ok, start the speculation!

Well for one, that Starfleet and most likely all of San Francisco appears destroyed would certainly be a change. With no San Fran - no Fleet-yards & that partially explains why the Enterprise was built in Iowa which, coincidentally is the home state of a certain future Captain.

I believe that with the attack on SF and the destruction of the Kelvin, which may have been protecting Earth from Nero, Starfleet in a act of panic and paranoia of a future attack may have split the construction of ships to different locations on Earth, instead of a tight concentration orbiting Earth.

The shipyards above Earth may well be completely destroyed along with shipyards in Mars as well.

This attack on Starfleet HQ certainly opens up many doors.

^ I'm guessing this is the "big thing" in the first 20m JJ spoke of. Flattening SF would change everytthing from the get-go.

Blowing up the good guys' homebase?

Been done so so so so many times and it's an easy way of setting up the plot.

It's cheap but it can work if it's done well.

Not bad at all. At least now we seem to understand the magnitude of the reasons why the timeline seemed so frakked up. It always seemed like a big piece was missing from this puzzle.

In Trek, or just in general? I'm trying to think of other movies where it starts with the "good guys" home base being destroyed...

Spoilery speculation follows.

Actually I think not. In some footage reports the cadets are heading out to their ships due to "some" attack, the reviewer compared it to pearl harbor. This is where we see Kirk and McCoy trying to get on a shuttle. Also cadet Kirk wears the same red uniform so I think that attack is from his time. The attack on the Kelvin is out in deep space when they are charting a star. We see a beam drilling into Vulcan but it's not an explosive attack on the scale of Xindi but more of a count down to destruction attack.

I'm not saying it hasn't been done. I'm having trouble recalling anything myself though. The idea of basically hitting the reset button at the beginning could end up being a cheap plot device but I don't really see it that way. "Cheap" usually translates to "easy", but there's really nothing easy about what Paramount's trying to do here.

That makes sense. So the "time altering" event is still the attack on the Kelvin, not an attack on SF.

Oh, hey now -- no fair paying attention to details and stuff! :D
