The Animals That Aren't Dogs or Cats Thread

Talia Fischer and Hilary Novak from All Seated in a Barn are back at another auction this weekend, and Talia posted a video on Instagram and Facebook that is a perfect example of the kind of condition the horse at these auctions are in.

This horse was literally dying from Pneumonia right there at the auction, and nobody did anything until they decided to save. The worst part is that the owner was able to just leave it there, like that, with absolutely no repercussions.
They were able to get it, but the owner made them pay $4500 for it, which is insane for a horse in that bad of shape. This video was taken yesterday, and as of this morning the horse was at the vet and actually still alive.
Along with that horse there was also one with a big open gash above its eye, and one with a twisted leg.

Apparently you can't when they take it to the auction, which is why people get so pissed. I'm not sure how it works, but you can take a horse in literally any condition and dump them at the auctions and nodody can do anything about it.
According to Talia and Hilary there are around 600 or 700 horse at the auction this weekend, and other than the ones they and any other rescues that might be there get, the vast majority will be going down to the slaughter houses in Mexico.
The saddest part is that there are quite a few horses there that really aren't in that bad of shape, and just need some foot and maybe a bit of footcare and that's it. The owners just decided they didn't want them, and rather than trying to rehome them or give to a rescue, they decided to just make a quick buck off them at the auction, and don't care that they'll most likely go off to be slaughtered a few days later. Which just baffles me, I really just don't understand how people can do that to an animal that they're supposed to care for.

Just a quickly little update, the horse in the video I posted, who they named Gunther, died at the vet's yesterday.
 
Just out of curiosity, how many people on don't know what this horse is wearing in the picture?

Some of the people I follow on Instagram with horses and donkeys have been getting nasty comments from people who don't know what they are. I was just a little surprised, because I thought pretty much everyone would know what they are, I knew what they were even long before I got really interested in horses.
If you know what it is just say you know, but don't say what it is, I don't want it given away for people who don't.
 
Well, I don't know. I think I've mentioned that I really have no interactions or dealings with horses in any form in my day-to-day life.

If I had to guess, I'd assume it was
a mask to cut out visual stimuli to help them calm down and/or sleep.
 
Nope.
I'll wait for a few more responses before I explain for people who aren't aware.

I waited long enough. It's a fly-mask. Horses can go buggie w/o protection from flies.

Ah, so I assume then that they are see-through from the horse's perspective?

Not entirely sure why you thought pretty much everyone would be familiar with them, though?

And the reason she talks about it the ways she does at the end is because she was one of the ones getting nasty comments, with people accusing her of blinding Monte and his horse "brudders".

I've just pretty much always known what they were, even before I knew much about horses. So I figured that pretty anyone who had ever even seen a horse would know what they were.
