The Animals That Aren't Dogs or Cats Thread

Oh no so cuteeeeeee

I'm a little concerned about one of the horses I see at the stables I go by on my bike ride.
When I went on Sunday a Clydesdale right by where I stop was down, and his owner was in with him. I actually got up the guts to talk to her, and she said that he's 25, which is old for Clydesdale, and he couldn't get up so she was giving him some supplements. When I went by Monday he was back up on his feet, but I haven't been out since then do to bad weather, and when I stopped there this morning he was gone. The farrier was there, so I'm hoping maybe he was the one they were working on, or he was just moved. They also moved his buddy, and horse that had been next to them, into different pens.

25 is extremely old/ancient and extraordinary for any type/breed of horses. I wish for the best, but be prepared to hear of the worst.

A while back I mentioned a crazy idea I had that I could never do over in the "What's On Your Mind" thread, but never actually said what it was. So I decided, what the hell, I'll share it.
I talk a lot about the animal sanctuaries I support all over the country, and my idea was either once a year, or once every few months, to go to one of them and volunteer there for a few days. First thing I'd do though, is give it a try at one of the local first.
I just don't think I'd actually have the guts to do it, I doubt my mom would go along, and I've never traveled by myself, and I haven't even really been more than a couple hours away from home since I was 16.

That's not a crazy idea...not even close. Do it.

Just do it as feasibly possible as you can, close to that. You might not be able to travel coast to coast often enough, but just volunteer as much as you can.
Oh yeah, if I do it, I'll make sure to do it very carefully.
I definitely want to volunteer at at least one of the rescues in town. There are actually two fairly close to each other, so I might even try out both. I'd probably only do one regularly though, if I decide to keep up with it.

That would be a wonderful thing to do.
Hubs volunteered at local shelter a few years ago and we ended up with another cat lol.

That would be the one advantage to these places, they're farm sanctuaries, and we live in the middle of a suburban neighborhood, so I can't take anybody home. OK, technically I could get a horse and board them at one of the places around here, but I don't have the $$$ for that.

If I had ever envisioned Emu racing, it would have been more like this ....
We have ostrich races here in AZ every year. :)

You should definitely give it a try. Sanctuaries are always looking for volunteers. :)
