The Animals That Aren't Dogs or Cats Thread

I did not realize until I saw the stuff about the horses I linked to the other day, that horses were not considered pets like dogs and cats. I always wondered why I never saw horses included on lists of best or most popular pets, and why places like Petsmart never had horse stuff, I guess that would explain it.

I know several people who have horses that they consider pets - albeit pets that they can ride - and they are every bit as loved and pampered and cherished as any floof or furball I know...

Slightly less physically affectionate, of course - I don't think anyone is ready for a lap horse ! - but I have seen them nuzzle warmly, respond lovingly to hugs, and make deeply meaningful eye contact with their humans. They know when they are loved :luvlove:

Definitely, I don't have horses myself, but I follow a few horse owners on Instagram, and their bonds with their horses really aren't that different from what I have with our dogs.

Always happy to see another dog owner here - today is a good day to floof !

I've just started to learn to ride recently - a beautiful, brown quarterhorse who is a working pet - and we've established a bond that's also extends to my dogs...

When we arrive he trots over to greet us - he leans in gently for a head scratch and hug, then there's some play bowing and snout-to-snout hellos - before the six of us hit the trail. It's a lovely relationship...

Since they say horses are pretty close to the same intelligence as a typical dog or cat, they are quite capable of the same affection (yes, cats CAN be affectionate, when they want to).

There are Petsmart stores with stuff for horses.
