Been placing critter food on the ground so that the squirrels don't attack the bird feeder. Is there a risk of them getting too complacent and losing interest in looking for food on their own?

I don't think so. I still go over to my house that was damaged in a flood almost every day to feed the birds and squirrels (and now a chicken). I notice them still foraging around if the feeders are empty.
