I ran into a group of women and some kids out horseback rididng, in a different neighborhood from where I usually do, out on my bike ride this morning, and one of the horses spontaneously came over to say and get some pets. He was really sweet, and had the best markings of any horse I've met so far. He also decided to check out the handlebar of my bike and snotted all over it. I didn't even say anything though, I just wiped it off with my hand and then on my jacket or pants and went back to petting him.
One thing I'm starting to realize about horses, is that they don't have much of a concept of personal space, he stopped with his face less than 2 feet away from mine, and some of the horses that I've said hi to at the stables have given hugs by putting their faces right up against mine or leaning over me and resting their head on my shoulder with no warning. The first time one of them did that, it scared the shit out of me for a second, before I realized what they were doing.

I was pretty sad to hear earlier today that this old guy, Stanely from Skydog, died. Clare, the woman runs it, posted a lot of videos of him and his BFF the minimule Boots, and they were always really funny and really cute.

On Monday they will be auctioning off more of the Alpine Wild Horses that will were rounded up earlier this year. I can't remember if I posted about this before the last, but the auctions are online, and some of the horses actually start at only $50, and at the last auction most of them sold for at little as $200. The catch though is that these are completely wild, unhandled horses, so while you get them that cheap, you are then on your own for transport, vet care, training and that can all end up in the thousands of dollars. There are several groups out here that are fundraising to try to make sure they all go to good homes.
If you are any of you would be able to take one of them yourself, know anyone who might be, or are interested in donating, please send me a private message and I will work on putting you in contact with the people who are trying to help them.
This is an auction that sells to kill buyers, so there's a pretty good chance any horses that aren't bought by rescues/sanctuaries or other good homes, will be sent to Mexico and will be slaughtered.

That's actually the same video I just posted a couple posts back.
For anybody curious about the video's backstory, it was taken at Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the reporter is Alvin Kaunda from the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, and the Elephant grabbing his face is Kindani. And his report was actually about environmental destruction and the draught hitting Kenya right now, not poaching. I'm not sure where the caption came from since he doesn't actually mention poaching at all in the clip.
