The Alcove - BorgMan's random art thread

So, I've dug up some old renders I had lying around; figured it'd be a waste of CPU power if I didn't show them off.

That hatch on the right is there to facilitate a connection between this command pod and a housing pod. By stacking these on top of each other (with the command pod being the topmost), an impromptu self contained base can be created.

Some sketches made during slow times at work. Gotta do something, right?

Fidgeting with a slipstream vessel. As said before, I'm a staunch opponent of putting the some of the most important transwarp components in the same place the main deflector is. That might have been how S116 chose to propel their ships, but Starfleet doctrine is to put engine critical components in nacelles. So that's what I've done here as well. I'm still pondering a bit how I should create more advanced parts of classic components such as the phaserstrips. I've recessed the bridge a bit; that helps both in giving it a sleek profile and pass it off as more advanced. But doing the same to the phaserstrips would probably not be a great idea...

This is a Federation weapons platform. The surrounding ring that houses the equatorial phaserstrips should be just big enough to accommodate a humanoid standing upright. That might mean increasing the height of it to 3 meters, but not sure yet. I do know that, after I decided on aforementioned, that the torpedo turret is way too big. But that's easily fixed when modeling it.

So... I was way too late with getting an idea into my head for last month's Art Challenge. On top of that, I wanted to do something else with the combination Excelsior - Gladius, but it just didn't work out in the time I had. Still, I wanted to post this here so that the long rendertime wasn't in vain...

Pretties time!

From the luxurious observation deck of the T'Karath, the higher echelons of Starfleet Command bear witness to the epic failure that was the USS Subutai. In the time it takes for a Vulcan heart to beat a single time, the status of the Subutai went from "all systems go" to "all systems gone", prompting Command to reconsider their hubris in trying to develop a mycelial core without the help of a certain astromycologist...

I saw images of the Hiawatha, liked / didn't liked what I saw, so decided it's a nice addition to my ever expanding reTOS fleet. Here's some WIPs:

I'm still not sure if I want to add the elevated aft of the Disco Hiawatha. Maybe, per my original doodles, I'll incorporate that shape in the upper pylon. We'll see...

I really like this design, especially using the TOS aesthetic. I wouldn't mind seeing the elevated aft section, just because it reminds me of the of the Contistituion class with the angle of the secondary hull.

During a recent cross country drive, I was again struck by both the Govt and private sector rest stops/resupply spots. The temporary bases remind me of that. Hundreds or thousands of these could be operating servicing various ships. I imagine smaller ones in the case of the smaller bases.

I'm doing a slight redesign of my Condor. I'm kind of getting fed up that people are selling my models, so I guess I'm going to start a Thingiverse collection of my own soon. If you can't beat 'm, join 'm...

I'm bringing her more in line with the ship that I based it on. While rebuilding I noticed that yes, even back in the day I based certain curves already on the Danube. Older me thanks younger me for it hardcore, because it meant that transplanting certain things (now that I have a Danube of my own) went really easy. I'm having some chamfering troubles with the more complex faces though... Also: I rebuilt the nacelles (they were butchered from a Warehouse Intrepid originally), rebuilt the pylons and am planning on redesigning the aft of the spine. Might become a micro torpedo launcher, while the impulse engines originally there will be moved to the upper or lower part of the aft hull. Might keep the segregated door. Maybe not.

Yeah, scaling was a thing with the original. It started when I was glancing over the model and thought "that's not how I'd make windows nowadays". I pasted the Danube in and came to the conclusion that I had made gross errors when making the windows for the Condor. It can only get better!
