The Admiral from BOBW & Seven of Nine

It could turn out the Admiral had a personal interest in involving himself with Borg matters due to his son and daughter-in-law's fixation on the Borg, leading to the disappearance of them along with his preteen granddaughter, several years ago.

Unless Annika's mother's maiden name is Hansen, of course.

7 of 9's origin story was invented years later and like most of Voyager is better off ignored. ;)

Anyone else think this thread was going to be about another "old man's fantasy"? :rommie:

Even if the Admiral was related, nothing much could have been done with it, since he dies at Wolf 359.

Wouldn't the distinct pronunciation be enough? Or should we assume that Garth of Izar spelled his name Kirk and was in fact Jim's uncle?

In any case, both the names are Nordic-Germanic patronymics, meaning "Son of Hans". To simplify, spelling it with an O is the Swedish way, while E is a Danish/Norwegian thing. Swedes today would generally slap a second S there, either to emphasize the possessive form or then to retain the full actual father-name: "Hansson". But a Swede emigrating to North America (like so many of them did) would probably suffer all sorts of variations in the spelling.

Nothing in the Hanson or Hansens case specifically suggests Nordic origins, so the name is probably inherited from the distant past of the families, or even adopted just because it sounds cool.

I've always thought he should get bonus points for honesty.

Makes me wonder what Shelby would do to get promoted to full Commander, in a less politically correct organisation than Starfleet!

In the TOS days, if risk taking overconfident young hotshots like Shelby showed up threatening Spock's job security, they likely would have been killed off in the last act due to their own recklessness. Karma and all that.

The "old man's fantasy" line got a big laugh at the Fathom screening.
I was about to say just that! I hadn't seen BOBW in two decades or so and definitely wasn't expecting a line like that in chaste ol' TNG, and going by the laugh I doubt I was the only one. :rommie: Were you at the San Francisco screening also?

(The Barclay mention got a heartwarming chuckle of appreciation, also.)

Seems we are phasing into a rep system whether the kids on top of the ladder decide to code it in to the board or not.
