The Action Figure and Toy Collecting and Discussion Thread!

I was going to put Chekov in the Power Loader, but his legs are too close together. I'll have to see if anyone else will fit.

Aaaaah! Happy you got them! I was the one who suggested the crew. This is the set I also bought. But the first I bought were actually these:

Kirk and Khan and console: http://www.startrek.com/uploads/assets/articles/StarTrekSelectKirk.jpg

Spock and Horta: http://diamondselecttoys.com.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/2013/04/Spock1a.jpg

They are not as articulated as the others, but they come with lots of props and different legs for different poses and you never would get such a Spock kneeling pose with the knee joints, so I think these are awesome. Plus that console alone is worth it.

Scotty was not amused:

I even found eggs for the Horta:

Yes, it was you! Thank you!

I've thought about the Kirk/Khan and Spock/Horta figures, but I've passed them up. They're still readily available, so...maybe.

One thing I noticed is that Chekov is from Art Asylum in one of their earlier releases and the two-packs are all Diamond Select, so obviously later), so Chekov has a different color tunic from Kirk and Sulu.

I need stormtroopers in 7-inch scale now!

Looking down the Diamond Select hole, I'm seeing some Marvel that I might be interested in (I'm not a comic book fan, but I like their recent movies) and some Ghostbusters!

Somewhere, deep in the bowels of my basement, there exists an Art Asylum Kirk in his casual tunic and the first Uhura they released. I have no idea where their accessories would be, If I even have them, anymore. Oh, and T'Pol in a spacesuit and Captain Archer in his duty uniform. I don't know why I have those. I didn't like Enterprise.

I was busy this weekend, building my first lightsaber.

Here she is, a TFA Graflex with light and sound.

That looks amazing? Did you build it from scratch? I've been meaning to look up the Graflex dimensions so I can build one as well.

Confession: I never made it to Chekov, he is my least favorite character. I never tried any headswapping on the Star Trek guys so I don't know how easily it could be done.

Have I shown you this already?

I bought the Enterprise Malcolm Reed guy despite never having watched the series just because he came with this cool weapon case. I am a sucker for props:

Props is also how I fell in love with the Gotham figures before actually watching the series. Have you seen the awesome stuff they come with?

I'd buy a 7" Stormtrooper as well. Those Star Wars figures are way too small for my liking. I even found 7" Indiana Joneses!

I've never customized a figure or done any head swaps (other than unceremoniously cutting several Luke figures' hands off).

I'll need to look up that Indy. The top one is a decent likeness.

I think there are 7-inch Star Wars statues, but I'm not sure how many articulated figures there are.

And yes, those are some pretty amazing props that come with the Gotham figures.

I only bought the T'Pol figure because I thought the space suit was cool. Archer hardly stands on his own without help. I don't even know why I got him.

I keep forgetting about all of the Playmates figs I have. The thing is, I kinda deliberately forget about the. I hate how they bend at the hip, all spread-eagle. They're so cheap on eBay that I have a box of carded TNG figures that my cat likes to lay on. I've removed it from my mind that there are toys in that box. It's her box now.

The other thing I don't like about the Playmates Trek figures is that they don't scale with ANYTHING else, and I like crossovers.

I mostly don't like the shiny plastic on the Playmates. Makes for awqward photography. Also the faces are not very realistically.

My Indiana Joneses are hard to find, apparently only available at Disney Parks. I got them from ebay. But there is also a NECA Indy which should be the same size and also looks great.

Can't wait for the next Gotham wave, it will have a medical chair which I intend to use as a torture chair for Kirk - he often was lying in such things!

LOOOOL about the cat!

I need to figure out the best paint for working with customs.

Then I recommend heeding any advice from TomFan. I've read his posts and viewed his examples for years upon the Doctor Who themed boards. He can turn a sow's ear into a silk purse...filled with pearls. He's been posting in this thread sharing his Trek oriented examples. In fact, he presented "before & after" photos of a PlayMates Picard and simply by reducing the shine and adding a bit of "low lights" to the face, it looked so much better!

I'm beginning to wonder what's up with the second Queen that I ordered. I have a tracking number, but tracking said that the tracking number has been created, however, there's no motion on it and hasn't been for a week (or since I ordered it).

I won't have room to display any of my figures properly for at least another couple of months, but I'm starting to get the itch to create, if not the entire bridge, several stations from TOS.

I need to reorder my chair in 1/10 scale because it just got a whole lot cheaper in their highest resolution material. I should probably order several. I'm amazed at how well the one I have now fits the figures.

You know, I need to say that I'm a little disappointed in the Power Loader. It's probably for licensing reasons, but it doesn't actually have CATERPILLAR on the back of it like the real thing does. I saw it and the Queen, back when she was complete, in the '80s at a local science museum for an exhibit called "Special Effects". I hadn't seen Aliens (nor Alien) yet but damned if those two objects didn't make an impression on me.

Okay, really, that's only a minor complaint. Truth is, this is my first Power Loader replica of any sort, and I'm chuffed as hell to have it, along with Ripley and Newt. I should be getting Hicks and Hudson and Vasquez soon, with Frost and Windrix coming up. I can't believe there's no Apone or the Lieutenant (I forget his name), along with the Company man. Damn, forgot his name, as well. Custom possibilities, I guess.

Yes, I saw them and they're amazing! However, if I spend my money I want them to be perfect in the first place and not having to work on every single one. I do like to customize figures for variants or to get simple things right, but that is asking a bit much. Plus they are too small also and less articulation. Granted they have greater character range. I also was envious of the bridge but now I have the MegaBloks one so if I want bridge scenes I can use that.

I did get the Galileo that comes with Kirk, so I do have one Playmates figure at least ;)

I for one really love the playmates figures. Yeah, okay, they are a bit cartoony, but somehow they capture the heart the of the characters much better than other lines. And their size is actually a strength. It's much easier to build sets and shuttles for them without them getting too large.

Sadly they are not exactly cheap in germany. :/

Yes, I've seen what you've done for sets, and they're amazing.

I admit, their size is an advantage for sets and shuttles, etc, but I cannot stand how they're articulated, especially at the hip.

I actually think that 7 inches is too big and prefer 6-inch scale, but I've discovered several franchises that I love are available in 7-inch scale, so I'll go with that.

I'm inspired by your sets, though.

I'm sorry they're not so inexpensive in Germany. Other than a select few, they're about $5.00 USD each here in the states and even less if you find a bargain.

Once I'm alone in this house (other than my cats), I hope to have an entire basement to build displays for figures.

@Starfury your sets are indeed amazing! I love them. But even at this smaller size I would not know where to store anything like that in my apartment. Plus I work in so many fandoms, if I had sets for everyone, I would need a whole house.

All my figures and props are stored away in boxes and only get out for playing. I set up, I take pictures, I put away. Sometimes it's hard to destroy a scene so I let it stand for a few days. But then I need the kitchen table for its original meaning once in a while, plus it also doubles as crafty table ;)

Shipping from America has become way too expensive in the past years (30 USD or more just for shipping) but you still can find a good deal once in a while on the UK ebay.

(greetings from Dresden to another German)

Yes, I've noticed that shipping to anywhere in Europe is far more than it was just a few years previous.

That's one of the reasons I like crossovers. :D

I'm pretty sure I'll only be doing Trek or Trek-inspired sets for my figs. Well, I say that, but I am tempted to have the grating from Aliens (and Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars) printed and make a scene with that.

You mean there's no TWOK Spock other than the "Death of Spock" 2-pack from Diamond Select?

The movies have so much potential for this line. I hope they are able to continue with it.

There is a "normal" and not radiated Spock in red uniform but he is very rare and hard to come by. Last I saw him on Amazon for 100 USD. I got one so I haven't checked since. I seriously don't remember where I got mine from.

Also the one on Amazon was actually without props and I got one in original box. Aside of the usual phaser and communicator he comes with the book he gave to Kirk.

Thanks. I found him on eBay for $319 USD (I don't think so) and by changing some search terms I found him on Amazon for about what you said. In cart.

I'd love to see Scotty in his radiation suit or Kirk/Spock/Chekov/Terrell in their space suits. There are also a lot of possibilities from the bar in TSFS.

So much potential.

I'm curious about why there hasn't been more of a push for Trek figures in the 50 years of Star Trek. Is it that Paramount and now CBS don't think they'd be worth the effort or are they not worth the effort for most Trek fans? Star Wars is essentially where it is now in pop culture BECAUSE of the merchandising and toys. Is there not the desire in Trek fandom for such things? I do understand that it is (used to be) more intellectual than most other sci-fi/fantasy (the books seem to do well), but what's the real story?
