Welcome to The 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nominations Game!

OscarBanner.jpg

On Sunday, February 27 the Academy Awards will be announced and I want to know what your Oscar predictions are! Just choose from the nomination list provided below and post your choices. Let’s see who can get the most correct. If you don’t know just guess! The more answers you give, the better the chance you have at winning. (And I have to ask that everyone keep the discussion about the awards to a minimum in this thread. It makes very difficult to accurately judge the contest with all the extra posts cluttering everything up. Sorry.)

Entries will be taken until 7pm EST on the 27th. After the telecast, I will announce the winner! Good luck and happy guessing.

I also wanted remind all you movie lovers out there that I will be starting the Academy Award Discussion Thread on Friday, February 25. Be sure to stop by and let us know what you think of the host, the outfits, the nominations, and of course the winners!

For more information about the nominations and the awards please visit the Official Website for The Academy Awards.

Conventional wisdom says to go with the best picture winner for most of the categories. However, in years past, the original screenplay category has been used to honor true originality. That's why I think Inception has a good chance of taking home the prize there. Before the DGA awards, I was pretty sure this year would see a picture/director split. After Hooper won at the DGA, his Oscar became a pretty much sure thing. Some of the other categories I just had to guess at like I do every year (foreign film, short subject documentary, short film, etc.)

Who will win:

Actor in a Leading Role - Colin Firth in “The King's Speech”
Actor in a Supporting Role - Christian Bale in “The Fighter”
Actress in a Leading Role - Natalie Portman in “Black Swan”
Actress in a Supporting Role - Melissa Leo in “The Fighter”
Animated Feature Film - “Toy Story 3” Lee Unkrich
Art Direction - “The King's Speech” Production Design: Eve Stewart; Set Decoration: Judy Farr
Cinematography - “True Grit” Roger Deakins
Costume Design - “The King's Speech” Jenny Beavan
Directing - “The Social Network” David Fincher
Documentary (Feature) - “Gasland” Josh Fox and Trish Adlesic
Documentary (Short Subject) - “Poster Girl” Sara Nesson and Mitchell W. Block
Film Editing - “The Social Network” Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter
Foreign Language Film - “Incendies” Canada
Makeup - “The Wolfman” Rick Baker and Dave Elsey
Music (Original Score) - “The King's Speech” Alexandre Desplat
Music (Original Song) - “We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3" Music and Lyric by Randy Newman
Best Picture - “The King's Speech” Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Gareth Unwin, Producers
Short Film (Animated) - “Day & Night” Teddy Newton
Short Film (Live Action) - “Na Wewe” Ivan Goldschmidt
Sound Editing - “Inception” Richard King
Sound Mixing - “Inception” Lora Hirschberg, Gary A. Rizzo and Ed Novick

Writing (Adapted Screenplay) - “The Social Network” Screenplay by Aaron Sorkin

I took a flier on the short film and documentary categories.

So in terms of numbers, that's:

The King's Speech - 6
The Social Network - 3
Inception - 3
The Fighter - 2
Toy Story 3 - 2
True Grit - 1

Not a bad division.

Who I think will win, not necessarily who I want to win.

For the first time, I feel like I can make good educated guesses because I've seen so many of the nominated films (the most recent being True Grit today).

Actor in a Leading Role

  • Colin Firth in “The King's Speech”
Actor in a Supporting Role

  • Christian Bale in “The Fighter” (Will win)
  • Geoffrey Rush in “The King's Speech” (Want to win)
Actress in a Leading Role

  • Natalie Portman in “Black Swan”
Actress in a Supporting Role

  • Hailee Steinfeld in “True Grit” (Will win)
  • Melissa Leo in “The Fighter” (Want to win)

  • “Black Swan” Darren Aronofsky (Want to win)

  • “The Social Network” Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter

  • “Biutiful” Mexico (I haven't actually seen this one, but based on the publicity, I think it's a shoe-in)
Music (Original Score)

  • “The Social Network” Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (Will win)
  • “Inception” Hans Zimmer (Want to win)
Music (Original Song)

  • “We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3" Music and Lyric by Randy Newman

Sound Mixing

  • “True Grit” Skip Lievsay, Craig Berkey, Greg Orloff and Peter F. Kurland
Visual Effects

  • “Inception” Paul Franklin, Chris Corbould, Andrew Lockley and Peter Bebb (I still think it's a goddamn travesty Tron: Legacy was not nominated)
Writing (Adapted Screenplay)

  • “The Social Network” Screenplay by Aaron Sorkin (Will win)
  • “Toy Story 3” Screenplay by Michael Arndt; Story by John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich (Want to win)
Writing (Original Screenplay)

  • “The King's Speech” Screenplay by David Seidler

On a side note, I have to say it's a bit odd that Biutiful wasn't nominated for Best Picture even though Toy Story 3 got both Best Picture and Best Animated Feature Film nominations.

“Biutiful” Mexico (I haven't actually seen this one, but based on the publicity, I think it's a shoe-in)
Foreign Language Film is one of the categories where you're actually required to physically attend screenings of all the nominees in order to vote, so publicity matters a lot less.

I know we are supposed to keep regular discussion to a minimum, but I thought some readers in this thread might be interested in a site I recently discovered. You start with a certain amount of points when you sign up and you can bet them on questions posted on the site related to sports and pop culture. They have a whole lot of questions on the Academy Awards up right now to bet on. If you choose an answer with low odds and win you will get a boatload of points.

The site is Prediculous.com. To see their Oscar questions you can search for them or find the Oscar Channel near the bottom where it says Featured Channels. Right now The King's Speech is ahead in the Best Picture poll with 66.8% odds. Oh, you have to have a Facebook account to sign up.

I just thought I'd mention it in case anyone would like to take the predictions they've made here to that site to earn some fake Internet points for them. It's kind of fun.

I myself put my points on The Social Network for Best Picture.

Even though there are a lot of nominees in each category, in most cases, if there is any suspense at all, it's only between two of them. For example, I think it's a guarantee that best picture is either "The King's Speech" or "The Social Network", best director is either David Fincher or Tom Hooper, best supporting actor is either Christian Bale or Geoffrey Rush, and best supporting actress is either Hailee Steinfeld or Melissa Leo.

It almost makes the other nominees seem pointless, although I guess it's an honour for them to be nominated. With all the toss-ups between two nominees, it's hard for me to make confident predictions, but the two I'm almost 100% certain about are Colin Firth winning best actor (and I think he deserves it) and "The Social Network" winning best adapted screenplay.

I'd like to see David Fincher win best director, though. If his movie can't win best picture, he at least deserves that. I wasn't crazy about "Inception" like a lot of people, but I'm still annoyed that Christopher Nolan didn't get a best director nomination. It's like the Academy has this weird aversion to nominating him that doesn't make any sense, like all those years when they inexplicably wouldn't give Martin Scorsese best picture or best director when he was clearly deserving of either or both.

So many votes for The Kin's Speech! Was the movie that good? Good enough to beat Inception? Even The Social Network?

I've seen all three and I definitely think the "The King's Speech" is the best of them. I loved "The Social Network", but I loved "The King's Speech" even more. It was more...uplifting, and the Academy voters are suckers for sentimental stuff. :D "Inception" was fun, but there's no way they're going to take a movie like that seriously enough to actually award it best picture, and the endless exposition makes it look a bit clunky.

Well, strictly speaking, this is a game of who we think will win. But I preferred TKS to either of those other films (though I'd have given Toy Story 3 my first-place vote, but that ain't happening).

Well then. My next day off, Im gonna see that. I saw Black Swan, and was mildley dissapointed. It was a good movie, but hardly best picture material. It was a ballerina movie disguised as something more! I don't know, mabey I was expecting too much, but the trailers teased it was gonna be more epic than it was...
