The 2009 Star Trek The Exhibition in Detroit

Did anyone catch the Star Trek The Exhibition this year at the Detroit Science Center? I believe it was one of four across the country. I was very disappointed. You could not take pictures, the models were not actually used on filming sets in TV or movies, there were some details over looked in creating life size figures like the band around Worf's torso was made of bicycle chains not some cheap looking plastic material used by the one on display, a lot of the historical information was repetitive, and the overall look was like a worn out old set in needing of touch up paint. There was some cool things but I can't remember them. I was hoping for more of a Las Vegas type exhibit with some actual used set props. Did anyone have a different experience there or at the other exhibits?

I agree. It wasn't as good as it should have been. However, since our family is DSC members, it was pretty inexpensive to go. I would have been more disapointed had I traveled a long way to see the exhibit.

The Transporter demonstration was kind of hokey. I did find, however, that as I stood in the entrance to the 1701D section of the display that showed the capitan's quarters it had the feel of what I would have expected being on the set would have felt like. I did like the last display that showed when each of the parts of Star Trek would happen on the timeline. That, and some postings here, inspired me to watch everything in order.

I came all the way from Florida to see the Motown Hitsville Museum, the Ford Factory, and the Star Trek Exhibit. I guess if I could have taken pictures I may have remembered some positive parts of the attraction. If you have a DSC membership yes its worth the trip but for out of town visitors as you said it was a disappointment.

It was a little disappointing in some respects I suppose, but then again I'm from the Detroit area, and I tend to associate most things existing in Detroit with complete failure and disaster, so I was actually fairly pleased on that level. The props and ship models were nice, as were the costumes. The bridge set was definitely immersive, if not totally accurate. The transporter room... well, I had more interest in the chick at the controls, to be honest. It was fun, and I got to see the new movie in the IMAX dome at the end. I never caught the full experience in Vegas, so I guess this will have to do. All in all it wasn't bad for what they had to work with. I enjoyed it.

I caught it when I was in Detroit last summer for my annual trip home. Glad I saw it, but was generally (greatly?) underwhelmed. I was also not impressed by the movie in IMAX, which I thought was just a blurry mess.

Hmm, I hope the exhibit is better by the time it comes around my area (just a few weeks away). I think the tickets are $25 and that's not exactly peanuts. The no-photo-taking policy sucks.

I never got to see the exbit as I live in Texas. I'm hoping it comes to Dallas/Fort Worth area sometime. I never been to a Star Trek exbit, and I like to go to one. I just want to see what its like. Do they have actual rooms in the exbit that represnt room off of the Enterprise? You know like the Bridge, Trasporter room and more? I would love to see the Bridge off of Enterprise from TOS, and sit in the Captain's chair just like Kirk. I really love TOS and I love to see rooms at the exbit just like from the show or movies. I would love to have my picture taken on the Bridge if they do that. I wouldnt mind take pictures in the exbit if its permited. If not as long as they have a suvinor book with pictures from the exbit I be happy with that. I have been to many Titanic exbits and museums, and know they dont allow pictures taken in the exbit, however they do have suvionr book with pictures in it. And they do have part in the exbit where you can have your picture taken next to a screen, and when you pick the picture up it has scene in the background like the Grand Staircase or the deck with your picture on it, its like you are there! Anyways is the Star Trek exbit the same way?

Yes there are some photo opportunities you can purchase but you can't photograph throughout the exhibit. I did not see much in picture books and such. The show's quality may depend on who sponsors it such as paramount or another associated studio/production, as well as the hosting venue. Detroit's wasn't that great but Vegas was outstanding. Vegas had some authentic props but none were authentic in Detroit. The uniforms on the display mannequins looked ruffled in Detroit. Little things that make a display look appealing was missing. The show look like a local art school's tribute not a high end glamorous exhibit. It's the little things that count. Good luck in your area.

Well unless the designer who you can see on the, I believe First Contact extra features DVD lied about it, then it's wrong.

Maybe I'm too easily entertained, but I really enjoyed the Detroit exhibit, as did the others I went with (one long-time fan, one who had only seen the movie and one or two episodes of any of the series). I couldn't have told you whether the items were real or fake, but they looked real enough to us, and I was thrilled to see all the costumes and the recreations. I agree with Who_Trek that I could have done without the IMAX experience--as much as I loved the movie, it just wasn't suited for their domed screen. My favorite part was probably the timeline at the end of the exhibit.

If the Vegas exhibit surpassed this one, I wish I could have seen it--it must have been incredible!

Thanks for the information, I will keep that in mind. I really do hope the exbit sometime comes to my area, I just wish I knew when. Is there any place I can find out tour dates? It would give me a better idea to know when it be this way.
