I had written a similar post about a week or so ago in which I had a bunch of links to your work, but I couldn't find it when I was pressed for time writing that post. Fortunately I found the post in my notes when I took a second look.


For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, Tallguy has compiled some incredible research on which effects were used throughout the series run which you can find here:

Zoe Bell was the main stunt double for Lucy Lawless on Xena. Neither Lawless nor Bell are Xena. Xena is a character who (particularly in the face) looks like Lawless, but who has a physical ability to move in combat which is much more like Bell. Have Lawless attempt to do her own stunts and you'd say, "That's terrible. That does not look like the Xena combat I am used to seeing! Will the real Xena please show up and kick some butt?"

The Enterprise is not a physical object (never was), but is rather a norm - the Enterprise (even when speaking ONLY of the TOS Enterprise) is the sum of all depictions that we saw on screen. Sometimes she has cheese-grater nacelle caps. Sometimes she has "bulbs" Each depiction is part of our collective memory and identification of the ship. The Enterprise is not defined by or equivalent to some physical model, but is rather a collective dream we shared sitting in front of a glimmering box.

The 11 footer is not the Enterprise, but rather played a leading role in informing/influencing the set of family resemblances that created the collective image we share of the ship.

Pssst there's no Santa Claus either...

...nor is there any one actor who has played Santa who "owns" the role. "Santa" as a concept is a norm governed by a constellation of resemblances. If you want to know what Santa looks like, you don't go on some foolish quest for the "ideal model of Santa Claus", but rather survey all the cultural depictions.

I am surpassed by no-one in my love for the 11 footer (equaled by many). But in that analogy Sarah didn't show up for most of the first episode and is only in a couple of shots in the opening credits.
