Ok, like I said before, you can dislike the reasoning, but it is what it is now.

Read my edit above this post.
Of course, the fact that he could have made it up on the spot doesn't occur to you? And, as said, Roddenberry told us where "Bones" came from. That counts more to me than some throw-away line in a movie that might be infered as being the genesis of the nickname.
The alternate version doesn't bother me, but now that you mention it, it does kind of come across as a bit insensitive. It gives new meaning to the line: "You of all people should know the dangers of opening old wounds, BONES!!!"![]()
All right. But not everything has to have a proper reason or meaning behind it; perhaps the nickname "Bones" is purely because Kirk likes it, for some reason or the other.Well, again, I don't see how it was their "answer" to the nickname as it doesn't really seem like they infered as much in a throw away line that seemed more a wink to the audience than anything else.
"Except for the fact that "sawbones" is a term for a surgeon, paticuarly one in the military, that's been in use since the Civil War and that it makes no sense to nick-McCoy "Bones" from a single off-the-cuff remark he made during a rant."
My wife is a surgeon and she's never heard the term 'sawbones".........I'm a military medic..and I've never heard it either...
Little known fact:
Kirk's original nickname for McCoy was "Fuckface."
He changed it to "Bones" when he got in trouble for shouting "Hey, Fuckface!" across the Starfleet Academy library.

After his wife took everything in the divorce, McCoy had a brief stint as a pornstar, thus the nickname.

Is that from Roddenberry? Can't remember.![]()
On a side note, Kirk now calls Pike: Wheels.
That's not how McCoy got his nickname!

Stop saying that Kirk gave McCoy the nickname "Bones" from McCoy's line about his ex-wife. That's not why he has that nickname!

Not only does such a genesis for a nickname make no sense, "Hey when we first met you said your wife left you with your bones after the divorce. It was an off-the-cuff flippant remark and using it as a nickname will likely stir up painful memories of your divorce!"
No. His nickname is "Bones" from the term "sawbones" a slang-term for a surgreon!
