That Sontaran (SPOILERS FOR AGMGTW)

JRoss

Commodore
Commodore
Man, I wish that he had lived long enough to go all pew-pew-raygun with his boobs. That is all.

It just strikes me as funny, a masculine character that lactates. Especially when he seemed so proud, and so used to nursing babies. What a fantastic avatar picture that would make.

He was the only Sontaran I have ever liked. Great character, and some wonderful lines. The ending when he proudly claims his identity "Rory, I'm a nurse!" made me go all tingly on behalf of warrior nurses everywhere doing glorious battle against sickness and suffering.

Joking aside, I really liked him, too. He's proud of his age (nearly 12!) and of his calling. He's humorous with his patients. He's brave. I've always maintained that the Sontarans aren't nearly as villainous as the Daleks and others, and I think showing this guy gives us some of that.

To be honest, I never really saw Sontarans as having any character at all until this guy. They were "Just-another-mindless-warring-alien" types... until the moment of "Try to get some rest". Suddenly, there's a person.

Well, I mean that since their schtick is that they are at war with an insidious foe, and that to maintain their people they are all bred for war, there really is no indication that they are villainous to the degree of omnicide, like the Daleks. For that matter, the Cybermen. The only ones we see are villains, but who's to say that there aren't small colonies just trying to get by?

They remind me of "wind-up samurais" Bread for battle like the Jem hadar, but they do seem to have a very strict warrior code.

I REALLY liked this character, and it was sad to see him go... Though, there is a story at some point that will get told (on TV... maybe not). He does owe the Doctor for something.

Well there have been some Sontarans with personality, Linx had oodles of great moments in The Time Warrior, and most of the nu Who varient have been quite amusing at times.

I love the Sontarans. Really, I just love villains who whole-heartedly embrace whatever ridiculous thing they are. Christopher Ryan is great in that two-parter: "The bravery of idiots is bravery nonetheless!"

This guy was great, too, my favorite part of the episode. Much more interesting than "Lesbians, hur hur."

The idiocy of lesbian hur hur is hur hur nonetheless!

...

But you're right, Strax rules.

You have, he was the other Sontaran in the two parter, and the one at the end of The End of Time pt 2 ;)

What I really liked about him was that he represented what is, for me, the essence of Doctor Who. The race of cloned warriors, bred to kill and die...but the Doctor somehow had owing him a penance. What penance do you exact on a creature like a Sontaran? Why, make him a nurse so that now he must heal the weak and sick. Best of all, he ended up liking it, despite his incredibly funny taunting of his patients that he hoped to one day butcher them on the battlefield.

That's what Doctor Who is all about to me: turning the soulless killer into a healer.

And yeah, the idea of him insisting that he breast feed the child was hysterical. I liked the connection to Rory as well. Rory is a nurse, not a warrior.

I hope they actually point out how the Doctor made good people out of at least the Silurian and Strax.
