That Pathfinder Moment...

I liked it better in Eye of the Needle when Janeway and her gang became suddenly crestfallen when their short cut home was stolen from them by a stitch in time.

Yeah, that's one of my favorites. Really good episode. Tuvok's stoic revelations contrasted well with Janeway's subdued anguish. It was a good scene, and one that you never saw coming. Three dashed hopes in the space of, what, like thirty seconds?

"Well, at least we got this."
"Actually, that's not happening."
"At least that, then."
"Not happening, either."
"The other thing?"
"Nope."

Tom was just too emotional himself - after FIVE YEARS of hating his father, the first phone call home reveals that the man was in charge of looking for them all this time. He was speechless, and rightfully so. Tom's reaction to hearing his father's voice was the single most poignant shot of the whole scene, IMO.

Mark

Total agreement.

Eye of the Needle was a good episode, but it was still too early in the series for me to really resonate emotionally. You knew on some level the crew wasn't going to get home, but yeah, they way ALL their hopes were dashed, even to just communicate their messages back home, was an interesting way to conclude the episode.

Interestingly, the part where the camera cuts to Tom etc was my least favorite part of the scene. I mean it's touching to hear that his father's been in charge of looking for them, but I guess I felt it was really more Mulgrew who carried that scene the most, and all the parts where she was communicating to Starfleet were my favorites.
