TFAW says DVD/Blu-ray sooner than you think...

If you hope the OP's information is correct, that would mean Star Trek was a massive failure at the box office.

So, Things from Another World just updated their website with new products for July (from the latest Previews catalogue). And they have listings for:
for release on July 29th, 2009.

I seriously doubt that date will be the actual release date, but if it is, is that the quickest theatre-to-home-video release ever?
WHAT,WHAT,WHAT!?!?! no EXTENDED CUT PLATINUM LIMITED DELUXE ULTRA DIRECTORS EDITION? UH-UH I'm not buying!:vulcan:

Do I have to repeat myself?

That would be less than three months from theatrical release to home purchase. That time frame doesn't tell you anything?

Maybe that was a projected date based on the ORIGINAL release date of what? Christmas 08? If so, then that would be a long frakkin' way off, but not too too bad. Iron Man took about 6 months to get to DVD, so that would have been about right IF Trek XI had been released last December as was planned originally. So maybe they're kinda going off of VERY OLD info. Since you know it DOES take months, even a year for stuff like movie releases to get into things like store sale ads, for marketing companies to create materials and such for it. I'll bet they already had some of the DVD release stuff ready last Fall, once all the principal photography and some of the other work was done.

LOL.

Nah, they will release each version about six months apart as is the norm for Trek titles on DVD.

Well have:
The Extended Cut
Extended cut Platinum Edition
Extended cut Limited Edition
Extended Cut Ultra Edition with free life size Enterprise
and

Extended Platinum Directors Edition with free Lense Flare* generator.

DVD/Blu-ray release date speculation

According to Digital Bits, expect the DVD/BD release to be in October or November, around the time TOS Season 2 and the TNG films will be released on BD.

and this thread mentions November 17.

2 other major Paramount Pictures recent releases:
Transformers
3 July 2007 cinema release date / 2007-Dec.-10 DVD release date

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
25 December 2008 cinema release date /2009-May-29 DVD release date

Both follow the standard 6 month DVD release window.
I also expect the mid-November time for release of Blu-ray/DVD.

Blu rays are just too expensive, but if it's coming out in July, I'll pay the $40 they're asking. :)

And that's exactly what they are expecting you to do. Don't fall for it.

I don't buy anything pre-order for that very reason. Also, because I don't like the idea of them getting my money now for something that I'll get a half a year from now.

I preorder stuff from amazon all the time. They don't bill my credit card until its ready to ship. And if the price goes down between the time I ordered the item and the time it ships I pay the lower price.

Which is exactly why they are doing this. They aretrying to cut into Amazon's racket because they can't beat them on price. I mean seriously, a list of $44.99 for a DVD?

July sounds reasonable - it is three months away, and buy then every summer blockbuster should of been released - so its not going to be that big in the cinema any more.

For the very first time I'm thinking "find someone selling bootleg copies on a street corner".

I'm not saying I won't buy the real one when it comes out. I'll just want SOME type of home copy to watch over and over until then.

July is foolish. Why wouldn't they wait until the Holiday Season to sell the biggest blockbuster of the summer?

Not only that, the prices are way off what they should be and Amazon doesn't even have a pre-order on this.

Again, $44.99 list price for the DVD and $49.99 list price for the Blu Ray???

You've got to be kidding me. There are no DVD's or Blu Rays that have list prices that high.

This is a lie.

I've have had no incentive to pick up a Blu-ray player yet. If I still like this movie, after watching it in IMAX followed by 2-3 times more in a regular cineplex, I will buy the Blu-ray release and a player.
