Texting while driving is nothing - don't try this

The story makes it sound as if her ex-husband was with her on her way to see her boyfriend. :wtf: I guess the fact that someone as stupid and physically unappealing as that can land not one but two guys should give everyone hope of finding that special someone.

Or these people could be just desperate and horny.

As for the story...there are no words...oh wait...how stupid.

Yeah, this is one of my hugest pet peeves. Everyday on my drive to work I see people doing multiple stupid things while driving: texting, shaving, putting on make-up, reading, using a laptop (on the steering wheel), etc. There was this one woman I used to see regularly (same schedule, apparently), who would be smoking with a cup of coffee in one hand and putting on her make-up (usually eye make-up) with the other, a cell phone cradled between her ear and shoulder all while doing 75 mph down the highway ... oh, and weaving all over the place. I'd see variations on this from her at least once a week, if not more.

I don't mind if they take themselves out of the gene pool -- only they're more than likely to take several innocent bystanders with them at the same time.

These, and many more, just add to my list of reasons why I wish the US would go all light rail, high speed rail, and bus service. Ban the automobile!

And how would one get to the emergency room at 4AM without a car?

Same like other countries. How do people in other countries (such as those in Europe) get to the hospital?

They have cars.

They also have much better-developed rail systems, of course, but they still have cars for when they need them.

Also, the relative compactness of Europe makes Eurail a much more practical option. A number of years ago I went to Europe with my family and we went everywhere on Eurail. It's a good system, and we could certainly stand to emulate it....to a point.

There are parts of the US where things are just so spread out that rail isn't a practical option. Have you ever tried arranging a long-distance Amtrak trip? The problem isn't the speed, it's the layovers. One train will arrive just after the one you wanted to connect to left, and you'll be waiting for 18 hours for the next one.

It's nice to see a woman taking her landscaping seriously. Kudos to her!

While driving, though?

As one of my fraternity brothers used to say: "We've entered the realm of the Super-Stupid!"

I've seen people putting on make-up, reading books, and eating sandwiches while driving, but this takes the biscuit.
My mom's friend's daughter (say that 5x fast) 4 accidents in 1 year cause of running red lights while putting on lipstick (on way to testify in court for a prior accident where she forgot-- yes forgot-- that her car was in reverse and rammed another at a gas station), 1 while trying to take off her bra after work without taking of her shirt, 1 while trying to light a smoke, and the 4th of the year, where she run up on a tractor-trailer, was while trying to tie her shoes.

Yes, she's that stupid.

Her car insurance cost is INSANE for even basic liability, she's lost her license on several occasions. And one judge said she's more dangerous than a DUI driver.

Not everyone. And if you want to push the issue, how often have you had to go the the ER? Yes, it's an example, and I'm throwing it back at you.

More often than not, it's called an ambulance. My suggestion is that the US develop a rail system like it once had.

BS. We could have something like that. This nonsense of "Europe is more compact" is a crock. My dad used to ride the streetcar from Chicago to Milwaukee -- in the 1930's/1940's.

There is a possibility of high speed. It's being done elsewhere and can be done here. The problem is that Americans have this unnatural love affair with cars.

I would be happy to simply use a mass transit system instead of having to pay ungodly insurance rates and upkeep on my car, but we live in a small town, and mass transit consists of one bus that shows up, well, every so often. I would love it! I mean, think about it; I could do my normal routine in the morning and be at the corner by, say, 7 AM, and the bus shows up, I can read the paper, listen to music, do whatever I want without worrying about driving through rain or snow, go to the grocery, go to work, and not have to worry about any of the driving or the mess of car ownership. On top of it all, I'd save money too! That would be great!

Okay, so since cars are banned, road upkeep becomes a lower priority, which means roads fall into disrepair, and that means ambulances have a much harder time getting to you.

And if the train goes between your specific destinations, that's great. The problem is when you want to get between places the train doesn't go. And the "spread out" argument is simply that it's a lot more practical in Europe to make trains go "almost everywhere" than it is here.

A few months back, I was investigating ways to get from Rutland, VT to Menomonie, WI. I figured out that there was a train from Rutland to Chicago and another one from Chicago to Menomonie, but they didn't meet up near each other time-wise. It would have been more practical to rent a car in Chicago than to wait for that second train.

Until the volume of trains is increased to the point where airline-like connection schedules are possible, that's going to be a problem.

The fact that Amtrak is restricted to 35MPH or so within the state of Vermont is another issue. Would have been faster to drive to Albany and catch the train there.

Stupid is not the appropiate word that I would describe her.
