Texting in theaters, and an Austin Theater's response

No, I don't talk, text, run screaming up and down the isles, etc. in theaters. In fact, I rarely go to theaters anymore for many different reasons.

I've said twice now that I agree with you in regards to people making noise in a theater. No argument there at all. What I don't get is why anyone finds texting so distracting, assuming the sound is off on the phone... so distracting that it is necessary to commit a misdemeanor in response.

Based on what you said...

Should they choose to ignore me, their phones tend to be found in multiple pieces ... on the floor, right next to the wall.

...I'm just wondering if you would actually resort to destruction of property in response to someone else's rude behavior?

In response to the OP, personally I think it's lame that they didn't refund the ticket price. I used to manage a theater (well before texting was ubiquitous), and our policy was to offer refunds up until halfway through the movie's play time regardless of why the person left. I don't have a problem with a theater setting their own policies as to what is acceptable in their own place, but it shouldn't be a license to steal. To me, that would be a matter of when the customer was asked to leave.

ETA: Yea, maybe we're just nicer out here. I worked at the theater at the MOA as an usher for a year, and asst. Manager at Northtown in Blaine for two, and in those three years, I can only recall ever needing to boot two people. One for running a camcorder during a showing, and one kid who snuck into a rated R movie.

Minnesota Nice = Passive Agressive BS, but it does make for a more civil atmosphere!

If you get kicked out for being a disruption, you are not entitled to a refund as far as I'm concerned.

When my eyes are focused on the screen, I do find the sudden appearance of bright backlights in my peripheral vision distracting. Put your fucking phone away. Go out into the hallway if you need to text someone that badly.

The public service announcement that Alamo Drafthouse made out of the voice mail was priceless.
