Yeah, that's not the real title. Anyway, after a long baseball playoff game that ended in a Walk-Off Grand Slam "Terra Nova" started a good hour late tonight. Didn't see any thread started for the episode, so thought I'd go for it.

So are they all going to be 'saved' by the dreaded common cold which somehow destroys the memory virus?

Re: Terra Nova: 1x04 - Unknown Pathogen Plot 4223(A) - Discussion/Spoi

I saw it at 8pm est in Canada and it was good. I thought it was the best episode so far, though it's basically your standard Star Trek plot again. There were some interesting things though.

Considering they're 80 million years in the past the "common cold" isn't the common cold and should be enough to cause their immune systems to simply give-up and kill the host.

Re: Terra Nova: 1x04 - Unknown Pathogen Plot 4223(A) - Discussion/Spoi

The cold passes to the dinosaur population, leading to their mutating into sentient beings...They then build a spaceship to escape from the humans and wind up in the Delta Quadrant, where millions of years later they come across a ship full of Earth people trying to get home...

The episode was... okay. Probably the "best" one yet but still reeked of about a dozen different plots from Voyager and Enterprise, Braga's stinky shtick is all over this thing.

He actually did not write the episode, so the origin of it probably wasn't Braga....though it certainly seemed like it.

But so far we're still watching.

i'm interested in finding out more about Taylor's family...sounds like his wife is African. Any news on casting of his son?

Re: Terra Nova: 1x04 - Unknown Pathogen Plot 4223(A) - Discussion/Spoi

Braga's still an executive producer so even if his pen never touched paper his influence can still reign on the show.

Re: Terra Nova: 1x04 - Unknown Pathogen Plot 4223(A) - Discussion/Spoi

I wish it were a little less...predictable.

Re: Terra Nova: 1x04 - Unknown Pathogen Plot 4223(A) - Discussion/Spoi

I actually missed this episode, it was pre-empted for a baseball game in my area. But I liked the title of this thread, so I felt compelled to post here.

Re: Terra Nova: 1x04 - Unknown Pathogen Plot 4223(A) - Discussion/Spoi

Yeah, the baseball game ran a good hour long, went into extra innings and it seemed like the regular innings themselves ran long too. (Unless a game before that ran long.)

Ended with a Walk-Off Grand Slam.

It pre-empted local programing in the 6:00 hour, pushed all network programing up about an hour and pre-empted local programing in the 9:00 hour, the 10:00 news here starting on-time after about 5-10 minutes of the local B/S news segment that usually plays in the 9:00 time slot.

Stupid baseball messed up my DVR'ing of this and House.

SPOILERS for House:

House was rude to everyone, determined that it was not lupus, and saved the patient by not playing by the rules.

LOL, that's only a spoiler if you've never seen an episode of House.

I enjoyed this week's episode of Terra Nova, was cool seeing Taylor go all Commando, enjoyed the Sixers at the end, being the ones with the Contacts to make things happen back home in the Future, and they're setting Josh and/or the Shannons in general up for a blackmailing, IMHO.

As far as young couples go, Maddy and Reynolds are a cute couple

Re: Terra Nova: 1x04 - Unknown Pathogen Plot 4223(A) - Discussion/Spoi

It was practically identical to Tabula Rasa from Stargate Atlantis, right down to the tablet PCs with recordings on.

Re: Terra Nova: 1x04 - Unknown Pathogen Plot 4223(A) - Discussion/Spoi

An ok episode, it was nice seeing Taylor spill some more of what he went through in the future but other than that it was so so. I hope that the show picks up as I don't really want it to be cancelled.

Re: Terra Nova: 1x04 - Unknown Pathogen Plot 4223(A) - Discussion/Spoi

Maybe its me in my old age, but this show still seems very light, like it belongs on ABC Family. Well I guess we did get the guy in the begining presumably eaten by the Dinosour.

Re: Terra Nova: 1x04 - Unknown Pathogen Plot 4223(A) - Discussion/Spoi

I really want to love this show, I really do. Love dinos, the junglely atmosphere and most of the production design, I just seem to have no more patience for episodic tv. Every plot element and every character is so predictable that I'm just bored out of my skull :(.

Re: Terra Nova: 1x04 - Unknown Pathogen Plot 4223(A) - Discussion/Spoi

On the baseball front--Playoff baseball games almost always last longer than regular games. They have longer commercial breaks between innings and team slow things down by overthinking between pitches and finding creative ways to use every single relief pitcher in one inning. I hate to see what would happen if someone didn't like baseball and tried to watch a playoff game.

On the Dino Trek....I mean Terra Nova front--There is definitely too much star trek influence here. Star Trek is (and I am not saying that this a bad thing) Seinfeld Science Fiction.. a show about nothing and by nothing I mean Everything. Except for DS9, the ship served as a way to get the crew to a place where they can have any sort of Science Fiction type adventure.

Terra Nova should be a show about trying to rebuild human civilization in the time of the dinosaurs--frontier difficulty, questions over the right way of doing things so not to make the same mistakes again, etc. The first two episodes were okay with that, but I still got the feeling that it wanted to be just a general sci-fi of the week show. Last night proved that for me. A memory loss episode could be done on almost any science fiction or fantasy show. Off the top of my head..Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, TNG, etc.

I still have hopes for the show and will probably keep watching it for the foreseeable future. But I fear it will end up as a mediocre stock plot show.

Re: Terra Nova: 1x04 - Unknown Pathogen Plot 4223(A) - Discussion/Spoi

OK, I was disappointed by the fact that the people in the lab weren't people from the future who were accidentally transported to Terra Nova and instead were victims of our old friend Mr. Unknown DNA-rewriting Pathogen.

That would have been actually interesting – I always love to see people in struggle to cope with circumstances they can barely believe, and it would have been relevant to all the allusions that there's more time travelling done than we're being told. Especially when it was an episode about getting someone from the future. Damn it, they already travelled through time, so a time travel plot is much more plausible than “I wanted to cure myself so I got everybody sick instead by a miraculous DNA malware.” And it wouldn't hurt if they advanced the the mysteries and the inappropriate questions like “what if we're not the only ones”.

That was the worst choice too. Unless they are wonderfully written I hate pathogens as a plot device even when they make sense, and the DNA-rewriting one never did. Especially after Star Trek. I have to admit this time it was a bit less silly because it seemed somewhat plausible. Anyway, someone should write a story about an epidemic of people getting sick after watching too much unknown pathogen plots.

Good points include that Taylor's character grew a bit for me, so I no longer see him as copy&paste of the psychopath from Avatar. I'm still not impressed by his character, but at least we know he isn't a psychopath and has some depth. I might like him at one point. And I sincerely laughed at the scene with the dinosaur, that was good.

Had some good moments thanks to the situation, but they didn't take full advantage of it. Why introduce a pathogen when that's all that you're going to do? Only one person getting scared by a dinosaur? And just getting scared with next to none evidence of how he feels? What about everyone in the lab? I would love it if they went on to explore the human character. That's been done a lot, but I've never been satisfied with it, so... I want more drama!
