LOL--I enjoyed this episode and liked the irony of humans already disrupting the environment. But, wow, every character and plot point could have been transcribed from an old TNG script. Wesley Crusher saves the kids (although Wesley has really now been divided into two characters); Doctor Crusher and data devise the antidote at the last minute; Riker and Worf rush to implement the plan.

That said, I have missed TNG these last 17 years and am happy its back.

Because the whole planet is a dino-infested jungle at this point in its history, I guess. Why would there be any area that is less populated with dangerous animals? Nature abhors a vacuum. Supposedly, there were even dinos living at the poles (in snow!)
Actually, as shown in the credits, this is a period when there was just one super continent which I believe according to the discovery/science/history shows I have seen, were mostly deserts and plains in the interior, much like Australia is today. Never saw anything about dino's at the poles/cold weather. Regardless, Jungle would have a much wider range of fauna to worry about than other areas.

I was under the impression that the colonists didn't choose where or when the rift opened. It was discovered, not made. Perhaps the plan is to eventually move elsewhere?

Who do we think will prance about shirtless waving a sword around?
My money's on Brent Spiner. It'll probably happen during his second or third guest appearance.

Oh, I almost forgot. What do you think, how long before they retell "Doctor's Orders", which was already a retelling of "One"?

Which is something of a mistake. This period is sometime in the mid/late Cretaceous period when the super continents were mostly broken up and taking their more familiar forms we have today. They were still mostly grouped together and there were obvious differences but there was no longer much of a super continent.

Earth of 85 million years ago would have looked just shy of the halfway point between the two top images below (and I added the super-continent from the Terra Nova credits for comparison).

Good observation. I knew there was something vaguely Trek-like about this episode, but I couldn't put my finger on it, but yeah, you summed it up perfectly. Though I would also add a guest character (Federation scientific specialist of the week) to the show who happens to be one of Deanna Troi's old boyfriends, causing Riker to be jealous. Or perhaps, Worf to be jealous, if this episode were from the final year.

Well, both Voyager and Enterprise waited a few years before telling that story. Though I'd say that if this show gets a second year, they're going to need a money-saving story desperately.

Other story idea: a Darmok/Dawn/Enemy Mine style story where someone like Jim or Taylor are stuck in the jungle with a Sixer, and the two must learn to set aside their differences and work together to survive and escape the dinosaur which is attacking them.

Maybe they should just start a new Trek series instead of a show about dinosaurs mining Trek for storyline?

We should spin off a Terra Nova prediction thread so we can check mark the predictions as they happen.

But we can have a temporal cold war if the people in the future of the Terra Nova timeline realize people from another timeline have been fucking with their past, and decide to retaliate with a technobabble conduit to their past.

...actually, that could be pretty fun. :rommie:

Might not be a bad idea, though I just want to make one more prediction than I'll shut up on the matter for a while. Mind you, it's one that everyone already guessed back when Braga's involvement with this show was first announced.

Nazis.

Nazis riding dinosaurs.

Couldn't he just sneeze on everyone?

And doesn't it still take a few hours if not a full day for you to get a cold after being exposed to it?

Just saw this episode (seems we're a few days behind in the UK), it wasn't too bad. The plot was a bit on the predictable side and they haven't really done much with most of the characters. Especialy the younger kids.

This is another map I found dating to 90 ma from http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~rcb7/RCB.html

Judging from what I've seen so far the show appears to be taking liberties with the science. Some of the stuff in the show wouldn't be out of place in the Jurassic period.

Makes you wonder why they didn't set it around 65 ma instead. Then they could put T-rexes in and deal with the K-T mass extinction at some point.
