Well it would be one way to go. Though I think that now that sort of ending woul end up being compared to BSG.

I know a lot of people call it a downer ending, but I've always had this feeling that ultimately Skynet wins in the end. That it was less about humanity winning and more about the human spirit of survival even knowing that there's slim to no chance.

That wasn't from the TV series, the rebellion against Skynet was. The invasion of other worlds comes from the T3 novel series. An alternate reality is also seen where the T-850 failed, the T-X killed Connor, and by 2032 the entire Earth is dead.
