If it helps read his Bio on Memory Beta in the novels he got his own command though also in the Mirror Universe that Chekov got is own command in the Shattered Universe game. But as far as canon goes his history after 2294 to his death is unkown unless you count non-canon novels,comics,fanfictions,video games.

I'll admit it looks like a ghost but the shape stays the same in each photo so it kinda looks like light reflecting on part of a house or garage or shed cus it has a bit of a triangular shape.
