Team CoCo news...

That's cool, because I won't watch every night. Frankly I'm just glad he's coming back. I swore a long time ago that I wouldn't change my avatar until Conan was back on the air, and I'm sick of this damn I'm with Coco thing.

Yep. I'm counting down the minutes until that carrot top clown graces the screen again. Can't wait!

Well, as one who is under Eastern Standard Time, so far it's been a blast for me. Not to raise expectations or anything, but I am laughing my ass off at Conan.

Yeah, I'm on EST too, and watching it now and his opening montage was hilarious. Though his jokes about not wanting to have the 12:05 time slot are really underscored considering it starts in Canada at Midnight at the earliest. Someone needs to tell him that.

I thought it was great. I always thought that Conan was a bad pick for The Tonight Show because it's far too mainstream and cookie-cutter for Conan's wackier sensibilities. He's a comedian that strives on absurdest, quirky humor and what made him so popular and funny in the first place was how he was able to utilize that irreverent humor so well on Late Night.

Conan seems like a much better fit. He can still be wacky and quirky and not have to worry about appealing to a mass audience, because let's face it, Conan's unique brand of alternative humor is more niche and doesn't really appeal to a mass audience. The older demographic just doesn't get Conan's zany antics -- they much prefer either the smug dryness of Letterman or the safe and bland Leno. Conan's style lends more to a younger demographic and I think that's why we got the type of guests we got.

I watched the show with my friend and he asked, "Why wasn't Tom Hanks the first guest?", and I think we got guests like Seth Rogen, Lea Michele and Jack White because they service a younger, hipper generation which is exactly the type of audience Conan is going for -- Conan is, if anything, that nice, cool, laid back nerdy every guy that is very socially and contemporaneously relevant thus his draw power. My friend also complained that this first episode didn't do enough to promote the future of the show and was too focused on referencing the past, but that's a double-sided sword: If he didn't mention the NBC fiasco, he'd be criticized, so he had to on some level. The real question is whether or not Conan's loyal fanbase will stay with Conan as his new show progresses throughout the weeks and months, and I believe they will. They were able to come out in drones to support him during The Tonight Show fiasco and they will stick with Conan with his new show. I'm not sure if he'll be a late night juggernaut -- I think his appeal is too niche and specific to ever top Leno or Letterman -- but it looks like his main competition is Jon Stewart anyway, and I think that's just about right.

I honestly believe Leno and Letterman are the hosts of the past, and Conan and Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert represent the future of late night television. I could be wrong, but I think Conan is going to stay with us for a very long time.

George Lopez is probably screwed, though.

Yeah because where and when it airs in Canada and how it relates to his jokes should be first and foremost in Coco's mind

That opening montage was fucking brilliant

"Larry King?!"
"I'm your guadian angel."
"But you're not dead...."
"Never mind that!"

Well, that's not what I meant. I meant that in an ironic twist of fate, it shows up in a time slot that he didn't want, and as such, it underscores the joke. It felt weird watching and seeing him talk about that seeing that I was watching it at Midnight. He might find meaning in it. I didn't really care for the guests tonight though. I feel that tomorrow, with both Tom Hanks and Soundgarden, that it will be more of an epic night of viewing. I just felt a little meh on the guests.

I loved the opening, but I stopped watching after Seth Rogan. Kinda made me wish I had stopped watching before Seth Rogan. I'm pretty sure he was stoned during the interview and his laugh was really annoying.
It's nice to be rid of the I'm with Coco avatar.

It was good to have Conan back but I didn't feel this one hit it out of the park.

Is he not allowed to use the circus music with the masturbating bear? That just didn't seem right, I think he needs to let go of that bit (no pun), it just feels kind of sad these days. Personally, I think he probably shouldn't go on with the "basic cable" jokes either. It felt more apologetic and unsure than self-deprecating in a Craig Ferguson kind of way.

I don't disagree, but that "future" is slipping by. Conan is older now than Letterman was when he moved to CBS. That's why NBC is so stupid. They should have kept Conan on "Tonight" and Fallon (or someone of that generation) on "Late Night," let the "older" audience get used to Conan (which they would have) and build up "Late Night" for another similar succession down the road. If NBC had done that in '92 they would still have no serious competition in late night. Whether Conan builds up a younger audience or fades toward a share of the Leno/Letterman demo will be interesting to see.

I thought the "second annual" first show was great. The only way to move on from the late unpleasantness was to make light of it better than anyone else could, and I think they succeeded. The taped opening was great, Conan's excessive arm flailing was killing me.

Seth Rogan was OK, but not my idea of a powerhouse first guest. Lea Michelle, a typical blah celebrity segment. When will Norm MacDonald show up is what I want to know, hopefully soon!

I like Jack White and "Twenty Flight Rock" is a great song, but I can't really get in to it when Conan is trying to do "serious" music. Seeing him with a guitar just makes me reflexively laugh, reminded of all his comedy pieces over the years. I really liked the tone White got out of that Gretsch, though, and Vivino and the boys sounded great as always. I miss Mighty Max Weinberg but they will be OK without him. Hope to see you on tour, Max.

I was glad to see the Masturbating bear making an appearance. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for Pimpbot 5000!

Regarding Conan being on an hour later in Canada...I kinda' like it. Unlike our American brothers, we don't have to make a choice. Jon Stewart at 11, Colbert at 11:30 and Conan at 12. That's a pretty awesome fucking block of television right there! :)
