Teal'c's age and General Hammond

Crewman47

Commodore
Newbie
Now obviously Chris Judge is probably a good bit younger that Don Davis but something that I never caught onto before was that although that is the case for the actors, for the characters Teal'c was a bit older than Hammond but yet Hammond would refer to Teal'c as son.

Now I know that son can be used by older people to refer to those yonger than them but was it the case here that Hammond wasn't aware that Teal'c was younger than he was or was it just something that slipped in by Davis himself as an ad lib?

I'm not looking too much into it, I'm just curious.

I saw it as a sign of friendship, close friendship, that's all, that Hammond would consider him one of his own, age is irrelevant

^^^ Yep. Also, calling someone 'son' is also a predominately southern thing, and Hammond of Texas is a southern boy.

Plus, lets face it, Teal'c looked younger. Regardless of his actual age, he looked to be in his 30s. From Hammond's point of view, he looked like a "son."

Well General Hammond is the "old man" of SGC. In a way all who work in the mountain are his sons and daughters. Only daughters in these positions are a relatively new development so the use of daughter is not as wide spread as son.

Also, with the longer lifespan of the Jaffa probably comes a different sense of what is older, in much the same way a one year old Kes was not a child due to the nine-year life span of the Ocampa. Teal'c was born before Hammond, but he was still 'younger'.
