teaching CONTINUITY

One thing I like about this PHENIUS and PHERB is how it teached the viewers (kids) the concept of continuity. The characters often refer back to past episodes, some from a year or so ago, and my son, who is six, will say things like "oh yeah, I remember that" and so on...

I think teaching children at an early age to try and remember past events helps them down the line, in terms of studying history and things like that.

My son's favorite show, non-animated? LOST. All last year when they kept switching back to the various points of the time line, I would often ask my son where in time they were..and he knew!!!! Whew! Since I forgot!!!!

There's a lot of people that will downplay the necessity of continuity in favor of "character" or "a good story" when they don't get the idea that well done continuity can improve both of those tenfold. It's one thing to fudge something that wasn't completely clear in the first place, but outright ignoring it just to tell a neat story is quite frankly, lazy. If you want to tell the story that bad, make it fit, or tell it on another show.

Never got into Lost the first time around, but we recently signed up for Netflix and that's something I definitely want to put on my list.

Which is why, after DS9, I found it hard to go back to stand-alone episodes. BAB-5, DS9I think, raised the bar that shows like LOST and Heros would take and run with in later years...

You can have continuity and not be annoying with it. There are shows that bring up the past, but not every single part of it. That way if you miss an episode or two you still pretty much know where the show is. If you miss 10 minutes of LOST you are lost.

But..if you've watched LOST (BAB5 seasons 1-4) from the start, it has an epic feel if the ending wraps it all up neatly. More so, for me at least, with WHAT YOU LEAVE BEHIND than TNG's All Good Things...
