T'Bonz, our adolescence is on the Internet - Again

I know Angelique, just in passing, from years of Baltimore area Trek conventions. Really pleasant and good-humored babe. Worked for Starlog for a while back when that was starting up, I believe; IOW she's seen this whole phenom grow up from nothing. As, I suppose, a few of us have...but most of us older than her.

Very nice. I especially liked seeing the pictures of Joan Winston. I sat beside her and Jesco Von Puttkamer at a screening of The Empire Strikes Back at a DC convention in 1980.

That's really cool.

I think I've said this already, but I've sadly (for me) never been to a Trek convention. I staff six (soon to be seven) Anime conventions a year up and down the east coast, but I've never been able to work in a Trek convention.

The closest I've gotten to anything like Trek is working security at Balticon.

I wish there were more pictures.

That was a lot of fun. If anyone is interested, there is a book: The Making of the Trek Conventions by Joan Winston that came out in 1977 that has a behind the scenes look at these early conventions. There are a number of black-and-white versions of many of these pictures in the book, along with some Phil Foglio cartoons. I just wish that I had been around for some of those original conventions.

Simply wonderful! Thank you, Dennis for showing that, and to all involved, wow, it looked like a once in a lifetime event that any Trek fan shouldn't miss.

I would love to go to a convention, but they don't come within hundreds of miles of where I live. Well, not in the past 10 years anyway.

Thanks for posting this. It really makes me wish I had been around during the TOS years.

I've also never been to a convention. There have not been any near me for many years and I haven't had the opportunity. I'm quite jealous of those of you who have experienced the early conventions first hand!

Oh, I remember reading about the conventions. None were held in Pittsburgh, and my parents who wouldn't even let me go all-night bowling in 1975 when I was, uh, 16 almost 17, wouldn't have let me go up to New York.

Those slacks! The checked ones. Oh God, what were we thinking!?

I didn't go to cons until I moved to Florida (1981) but then I went for several years in a row. The stars will still young, as was I. *grin* It was great fun. I even got to see DeForest Kelley.

Click here to see two photos.

In the first one, my daughter, now 23, was sitting with Nichelle Nichols, who was enchanted with her. Bec was equally enchanted, with Nichelle's big turquoise ring. She didn't want to return it.

I'm in the middle (shut UP about my hair style!) and George Takei and a Vulkon guard were the others in the photo on the left. The one on the right is my Bec with Nichelle.

The news was filming then, and Bec and Nichelle made it on the 6 o'clock news. How I wish I had a copy.

Even though I didn't go to the earliest cons, I knew about them. I devoured the Blish and Foster books, plus the few others out then (there was a time when one could have EVERY Star Trek book and not be broke!) and bought film clips from Lincoln Enterprises and whatever else was sold (Viewmaster reels of Star Trek, etc.)

I don't miss being poor, or living at home with the parents, but I sure miss the innocence of those days. Fans were united, not fractious.

^ Wow! That is awesome! You got to meet Nichelle Nichols and George Takei! *squee* :D

Aww.. such wonderful stories T'Bonz! And your hair looks super cute :)

I have been to one convention, in 1978, I was 16. It was in NYC and Isaac Asimov spoke. I loved it and I wish I could have gone to some more!! I was just thinking today while rearranging my library of Treklit how I once owned ALL Trek you could buy. Blish, Foster, The Technical Manuel, Spock Messiah, that light blue Concordance.. and I remember when a book came out with fanfiction, probably Bantam, anyone remember that? I actually still remember a line from a poem I read in it about Spock and Leila! "And I remember you, and Earth and tears". Lots of rhyming about "the years" lol. And that was all my Trek so when I went to that con I spent all my money on fanzines :D

Thanks Derek for the photo link, it was a real treat. T'Bonz you should get that photo of Nichelle and your cute baby framed, that is a real winner.

Like a lot of people, my first reaction is "Oh my GOD, the fashions!!"

That mauve liesure suit Shat is wearing that fades out as it goes up and down...

The 70s truly were a bizarre time.

That would be really cool.

I just wish there was a website that had a pictorial history of the whole thing. There's so many different aspects of pop culture in those pictures that I happen to find quite interesting.

I met all seven of the TOS regulars over time (the last was Shatner a few years ago.)

Takei and Nichols were both very friendly and seemed to enjoy the fans, Koenig was a bit standoffish (although it appears from what I've read that he's more shy than standoffish,) and Doohan was fun and loved the fans. Doohan would go through his repertoire of accents for us, which we enjoyed.

I heard the "big three" speak, but didn't get to personally interact much with them. Nimoy was dry, Kelley was interesting, but a bit reserved and Shatner knew how to entertain a crowd.

It's always enjoyable when the actors are friendly. I met Connor Trinneer a few years ago, and he had no problems standing and yapping with fans. A few of us were in the bar with him (WHAT?!) and what was the topic of discussion? His toddler son! :D

:) That's great! I didn't get to know Joanie until the 90's. She was great.

Thanks for linking to the pictures. It's amazing to see how many people were at that con! I love looking back at fannish history. I'd love to put together a book of picutres through the years and in different contries, too.

The funny part to me is that the people in costumes are the least dated looking of the bunch when it comes to the fashions.
