Well, many months after we first saw them it looks like we have the answer to the question of why various characters in the series opener are covering themselves with Tally Marks.
Since it’s now been revealed that the Grey-like aliens in the story have the ability to make you forget seeing them, I’m guessing that the idea is that if you suddenly find yourself with more marks on you than you remember making, you know you’ve had an encounter with them.
I don’t see how it helps much in a proactive sense, though.
