Talking about stereotyping women

Driving a car is not an activity that needs a lot of physical strength (or even intelligence). To claim women in general are incapable of driving a car, ist just ridiculous and insulting. Especially since we're not even talking about something like Formula1, but simply fucking parking a car.

It's so much a matter of strength or intelligence, but spatial reasoning when it comes to driving a car.

There is a marked difference between men and women when it comes to spatial reasoning. Men are better at certain parts while women excel at other parts.

But on the whole, I think it really comes down to an individual basis and not a gender one.

I know plenty of excellent chick drivers and plenty of awful male drivers.

I disagree, it just takes some training. I know some extremely stupid people who drive well.

....you need to think before you park, my dear. Stupid people can be stupid in a majority of things but have intelligence in parking, lol. Just because a person is stupid, for the most part, doesn't mean their brains don't click in once in a while. I've met quite a few generally stupid humans who suddenly do something intelligent and my mind is blown.

Training also takes some intelligence. A dumb person wont learn anything.

It does take a bit of intelligence to park a car. If you aren't smart enough to know how close you are to another car, you're going to hit it. If you aren't smart enough to know your van isn't going to fit in a spot that's big enough for a Bug, you're going to hit everything around you.

If you're this stupid then, again, you have no business driving a car anywhere. Shit, you probably can't manage to remember which direction to turn the fucking key.

Every day I wake up thinking it's the 21st Century, and every day I'm reminded it's still the 1950s.

That's adorable lol. So if you take two infants, one boy and one girl, and have them participate in identical strength and conditioning programs for the first 18 years of their life, I take it you expect them both to be fully prepared to play professional football?

I suppose you don't think a man should offer to walk a girl to their car? Because hey, this is the 21st century, and if we all simply think progressively women will suddenly compensate for thousands of years of evolutionary differences.

Men and women are extremely similar in that we're all human beings that deserve respect and equal rights, but thinking that there aren't differences that manifest themselves in countless ways every day is shockingly stupid.

There's no physical difference between men and women that should preclude one or the other from being able to drive a normal car equally well assuming the seats, mirrors, and controls are all properly adjusted to account for height, so your football comparison falls kind of short.

Walking a female friend or coworker to their car in a dark parking lot at night is not disrespecting her unless she's specifically asked you not to do it or something. I don't recall anyone in this topic denying that there's a difference in average size and strength between men and women before you brought it up even though it has little to do with this specific issue. Nor does anyone deny that women are more likely to be the victim of a physical/sexual assault in such a situation. No outmoded concept of chivalry solely towards women is required, simple care and concern for the welfare of others - men or women - is all that is needed. If you have a small man who could possibly be robbed or if it's a bad neighborhood, you should walk the men out as well.

Again, no one is denying physical differences between men and women or saying that those differences should be ignored, it's just that in this situation those differences are rather insignificant to the larger issue. Plus, you seem to have latched onto this one thing while completely ignoring the obvious condescension of the program with the cutesy color schemes, female-only parking attendants more attuned to "women's needs," and drastically overcompensating size differences in individual parking stalls.

Several people wouldn't even mind some of the changes (bigger stalls) if they were geared for the benefit or everyone and not just a derisive commentary on women drivers.

Fair enough. I was just speaking to my opinions of women drivers, and their hilarious parking antics. It's more of a joke to me, I give all my girlfriends crap about it, and they routinely find male stereotypes to rag on me about.

To be sure, there is a tad more condescension involved in this situation than most westerners are prepared to accept. While I think bigger parking spaces is a good idea, they certainly could've found a gentler, more respectful way of implementing it.

What on Earth does a man's superior upper body strength have to do with the ability to park a car? Of course men are physically stronger than women. Of course there are inherent physical and psychological differences. Parking a car falls in neither category. Some men can park well. Some women can park well. Some men can't park well. Some women can't park well. It's as simple as that.

Accuracy and physical skill really have nothing to do with intelligence.

I guess you guys have never met any drummers eh?

Are you kidding me? It's as simple as that? Yeesh, I wish someone would've told me that before I started grad school, if only I had known all along that I could just ask Dorian Thompson to explain the intricacies of genetic differences found in men and women I could've saved a ton of money! Anyone else here want to sum of world history with a haiku or something?

Thanks for breaking that down for us. Did everyone catch that? Some people are better at things than others, it's as simple as that. She'll be here all week, and is autographing her new genetics textbook after this seminar, it's about half a page...

I don't mind the gender implications you've made so much as the fact that it just goes against all evidence I've seen. When I think about the people in my life, the people I see in parking lots, and the people I see driving, I can say that for the most part the males weren't as good as the females. The women drivers seemed more considerate whereas the males were more...selfish with it, I guess you could say. But of course, I've met good drivers of both sexes.

Two random infants? I would expect them to be equally prepared for professional football, yes. :rommie:

You suppose incorrectly. At the very least, it would be two against one. And while, on average, men are larger and stronger than women, many women know how to defend themselves very well; certainly as well or better than I could.

Men and women are extremely similar in that we're all human beings that deserve respect and equal rights, but thinking that there aren't differences that manifest themselves in countless ways every day is shockingly stupid.
There are certain physical differences than have resulted in entrenched customs that are proving extremely hard to overcome. People love their stereotypes, not only because it gives them a feeling of superiority over others, but because the conformity gives them a sense of identity that they may otherwise lack. Psychologically, men and women are the same: They are individuals.

Damn, take a Midol and calm down.

 :wtf:

What did your parents do to you?

There's no physical reason at all why a woman isn't able to control a car as well as a man. None. Back in the days before power brakes and steering? I may concede that it takes a bit more strength to control a car, but even then it'd be pushing things.

It doesn't take that much strength to turn the wheel of a car at all. There's no physical reason why a man can control a car better than a woman. None.

You've made fun of spouses/mates about their inability to drive because of their gender? Did you also make fun of them because they can't pee standing up, do math, or tell them they had no place doing "man things" and should just stay in the kitchen when men are talking?

Sheesh. What a catch you are.

^^
Have you ever driven a pre-BMW Mini? I don't think there's any car that comes even close to being as much fun. ;)
I think my midget would beat it.

Maybe its the confusion over the whole "this is six inches long" thing ;)
