Taking out Rura Penthe: Was it a good idea?

Why the heck were those two scenes cut out? It explains a lot about Nero's motivations.

How so? I don't see it.

For the record, they reportedly had a test audience view the first screening and the Klingon parts weren't favorable with them.

From that excerpt, I don't see where they were going to put in the STAR TREK title card with the epic Giacchino theme. In the final version, it cuts right to it after the emotional punch of George Kirk's death and Jim Kirk's birth, which makes all the Kelvin stuff a perfect prologue to the movie. An extended section with Nero and his crew attacked by Klingons wouldn't have been nearly as effective, IMO.

Also I think Nero's backstory and motivations are pretty stupid and half-assed to begin with, so without radically changing the whole time-travel angle of the film I don't see how adding a few superfluous scenes make him a better character or more effective villain. That said, it's cool to see where Nero's line "The wait is over" came from, as it was used to great effect in the trailers. :D

They did ?
I don't remember hearing anything about such Star Trek test screenings.
Do you have a source for this ?

Reading the script and then seeing the final product really gives you a great appreciation for the editing of the film.

Actually, I think there are some parts of the script that got ruined in the final movie, because of various reasons (editing at some points, acting/casting at others).

Had they been in the movie, people would now be saying, "Why didn't we see more of Nero's time with the Klingons. It would have explained a lot more about Nero's motivations."

The director simply has to draw the line somewhere. Abrams realised early on that the Klingons had potential for expansion in a future film, and I'm glad in the film we saw that we switched from the fleeing shuttles to the opening titles, with that amazing music. The appearance of decloaking Klingon vessels would have really changed the whole mood and pacing of the film.

I'm looking forward to seeing baby Spock on Vulcan, the helmeted Klingons, and other cut scenes, but the bonus scenes section of the DVD will do me fine.

I don't think so. IIRC, JJ decided to remove the Klingon subplot at quite an early stage. He was pleased with the design work and wanted to keep it for a future film. It was removed long before test screenings.
