Takei in "The Twilight Zone"

DataRules

Lieutenant Commander

Of course, we all know about Shatner's two episodes in "The Twilight Zone," but I had no idea that George Takei was in an episode called "The Encounter." Considered so controversial at the time (1964) for its racially charged content, the episode was only broadcast once. Apparently, it's a rarely seen episode, and I just watched it for the first time on DVD yesterday and thought it was fabulous. So if any of you have never seen it, I high recommend that you do.

Here are some links with reviews.

Peace. :)

Yeah, I caught that one a while back (from repeats here in the UK)

Good episode, thoughtful, more so than Shatner's encounter with the gremlin.

They're not the only two TOS cast members to feature in the Twilight Zone, Scotty got a role using some kit from Forbidden Planet too IIRC.

James Doohan was in "Valley of the Shadow," a story about an isolated community that had been given advanced alien technology (including what we'd now call replicators and transporters) and wanted to keep the rest of the world from discovering it. There was no use of Forbidden Planet props or costumes in that episode AFAIK, although there certainly were a number of TZ episodes that did reuse them.

I'm pretty sure Nimoy had a minor part in one TZ episode -- I think it was "The Purple Testament." And of course many TOS guest stars did TZ episodes.

Oh come on, Shat-ner was pure fun and you know it....

Shatner : There's.... Some.... Thing.... On.... The.... Wing....

Besides it led to the funnyest exchange in history.

Shatner : The flight was terrible, horrible, first they ran out of drinks, then the plane hit some bad turbulance, and I think I saw something on the wing.

Lithgow : The same thing happened to me !

* Well, I thought it was hi-larious anyway ;) *

I'm sure the communicators from FP were reused as the devices the villagers used, little boxes with a pull out wire.

Nimoy played a radio operator in the TZ episode A Quality of Mercy, one easily confused with The Purple Testament, owing to both having WWII combat settings.

Shatner is the bomb, but my favorite TZ with him is the one with the diner and the devil head you put pennies in that tells the future. He's so young and hasn't become an ACTOR yet, so it just feels like seeing young Shatner.

I highly recommmend it. :)

I like The Encounter. George Takei was pretty good in it. Although I agree that the story doesn't really seem to have any focus to it.

Neither did I and I've seen every episode at least 5 times.

They're repeating 3rd Rock in the UK (again) and I caught that only a few weeks ago, I wish there had been some fans of The Twilight Zone in the room with me at the time to laugh along with :)

An early example of the later stuck in a burning station/broken down shuttle/hostile planet scenario Trek and other series loved so much.

Not much focus, just two guys forced to look back on unpleasant memories.

Takei's episode, "The Encounter," has generally not been included in TZ syndication packages.

^^Yeah, my library has a 37-volume DVD set of "The Twilight Zone" and the episode is on volume 33. Never heard of it before. And the show is one of my all-time favorites.

Peace.
