IDIC requires you think about Joe Six pack too. I see no where that criticism is not welcomed and discussed here. Staunchness in opinion is just a sign of conviction. If you don't agree with it, it is your job to argue against it. That's debate.

Of course you don't. When you're on the "winning" team, you only see things in terms of good things for yourself.

I am not here to be some kind of advocate for people who wish to discuss whether this is ST or not(some of them, quite frankly are not intelligible and I do not wish to spend my time deciphering their barely text speak gibberish)but whether or not YOU see it, there ARE people here who are feeling they cannot discuss this very issue for fear of being jumped on and made to feel like the party poopers or wet blankets.


P.S. If you wish to see an example of where this is happening, check any thread where Dennis has come back to these posters with his pithy three word replies purposely designed to show how smart he is and how dumb and wrong they are for not embracing this like the coming of the saviour.

Our own cuddly and loveable Dennis is not the only one, he is the foremost poster I can recall off the top of my head because his repsonses are just so obnoxious and jarring, leaving no room for counter-argument but seeming to be designed as a putdown. In this type of environment, people end up feeling intimidated and like they cannot put their opinion foreward.


And yes, I am aware of the smackdown I gave to a new poster yesterday but that was for an entirely different reason that involved his stance on demanding to be read on these boards when his posts were run on sentences with no paragraph breaks. Once the young 'n altered his original post, I attended to it and gave my opinion.

Yes - there is actually a lot of that going on around here lately. I have at the moment four ongoing discussions with people from here and elsewhere regarding this fairly new phenomenon that is occurring where people feel they cannot actually discuss,

1) Is this Star Trek?...

Sadly each of these people have stated they feel intimidated to discuss these things on the boards. One person even compared it to not being able to openly criticize bad decision made by the US in the Middle East in the aftermath of 9/11...

It's actually rather scary and, for somebody looking at studying psych, quite an interesting phenomena in group thinking.

It is, isn't it? "Scary" might be overstating it, but "discouraging" I'd go with. I personally don't mind expressing an unpopular opinion—I was also outspoken about how idiotic Bush's policies were after 9/11—but I do see a lot of people jumping on the bandwagon about this movie, willfully ignoring its flaws and the questions it raises.

(Then again, I've seen a couple moderating their earlier gushing opinions too... perhaps the groupthink euphoria wears off after a while.)

^ Actually I think we are discussing it. Just because we don't agree with him doesn't mean that we are telling him no he can't think. He says that you can genuinly call it non Star Trek and some of us are saying that you can't. That's not prohibition, that's the nature of his question. It is a debate...

Well, no. Saying "I think it's legitimate Star Trek, and here's why" is participating in debate. Saying "You can't disagree and say it isn't" is trying to shut down debate. That's the distinction.

Well, no. Saying "I think it's legitimate Star Trek, and here's why" is participating in debate. Saying "You can't disagree and say it isn't" is trying to shut down debate. That's the distinction.

Yet oddly I have not seen that yet. I saw some accused of it, but haven't seen it yet.

There is no score here. Just people saying it is Trek and people saying you can't call it Trek.

Star Trek was never about linearity and summation, or following strictly in series. It was about exploring the many permutations and combinations that could be imagined, re-imagined, expanded and synthesized from the initial mythos.

Didn't see it before but that is an awesome sentence.

Star Trek is owned by Paramount. This movie is called "Star Trek", the characters are Star Trek characters. This movie, no matter how much you love it or hate it, is Star Trek, it is official canon. Whether you like that or not, is up to you, but it is Star Trek. No amount of wishing or smiley faces can change that.

Clearly, he was not asking "is the film part of the brand trademarked as 'Star Trek' and owned by Paramount?" He was asking, is it Star Trek in the sense of being part of the same fictional reality? Does it share the same ethos? And on those points, there's ample room for debate.

Are the fan-produced "Phase II" episodes "Star Trek"? By your economic definition, obviously not. But in spirit, one could argue that they're closer than this film is.
