Syfy Orders The Expanse to Series

This came up earlier in the TV Development thread. I had said in that thread that I really really like the source material, though I've only read the first book so far, Leviathan Wakes. It's certainly high concept and can be a prestige project for SyFy, but it'll be hard to do on any tv budget, even like an HBO, so I think the network is in for a real challenge. Even still I'm excited just that they are taking the chance. Apparently they won a bidding war for the project, so they putting their money with their mouth is so far on all this talk lately of going back to their roots of more traditional science fiction.
This sounds good to me. I haven't watched anything on SciFy (I can't even spell it) since the end of BSG. But I will probably give this a shot.

It's a shame it's on SyFy; the channel that believes Helix to be hardcore drama.
I watched Sanctuary, through it's end, and enjoyed it, and was sorry it didn't get one more Season.
I tried Being Human, The "Heroes" show, Defiance, and Eureka, and none of them appealed to me, though, I watch Eureka all the way through, after it ended, and it was pretty awesome. Warehouse 13, also didn't appeal to me out of the gate, but, I started watching it when S4 was almost over, and I loved it too.
SGU is the only Space Opera that I didn't take to most of it from SyFy (Though, I did enjoy S2), so, I am looking forward to trying it out. (SG1 was 7 Seasons in, before I climbed on board with it, but, ended up enjoying it all once I climbed on board)

I am curious as to what people know about the source material.
Not sure how to answer this question without getting too spoilery, and I've also only read the first book, but
it starts off kind of more hard science fiction, a couple hundred years in the future and humanity has colonized the solar system but because of the realistic limitations of no faster than light travel, haven't gone out from there. Earth is a power, Mars is a power and then there's been some colonization of the Belt and the out solar system, but they are all dependent on Earth and Mars. Then there's a plot development that kind of kicks off a more traditional science fiction story line. There's kind of two main characters, one is your traditional XO of a corporate spaceship and the other is a police detective on an asteroid colony.
I've only started reading the first book as of last week, but I really like it so far. This is a great series to adapt for television because, although it's science fiction in space, it's not as far out there as Star Trek. There are no aliens (so far), FTL travel, transporters, or holodecks. It's a very grounded sci-fi series and that will appeal to the Game of Thrones crowd.
Certainly sounds interesting. The books any good?
Having met and chatted with one of the authors/creators several times, I am quite happy for his success. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. The first book is quite excellent and the setting certainly has plenty of potential for a series, even if they deviate considerably from the plot.
