Really? Which characters are you talking about? And how many is "way too many"?
I apologize for any confusion I finished Sword of Damocles and it looked like some of the characters I liked were going to be killed off.Fortunately I was wrong about that..In J.m. Dillard's novel Resistance some of the crew members I like got killed by the borg. And I was sorry Nave was killed.I liked her character.That was what I meant.The other books I mentioned were not StarTrek books.
I'm only on Chapter 3 of the book, but I am already loving it. I must admit to having gotten lost during some of the stuff with the Darkings and the signal,on the other hand though, I love what you're doing with the characters. These characters are slowly moving up to the top of my list of favorite characters, especially Dakal, Jaza, and Huilan.

All the characters who died in Resistance were only introduced in Resistance (other than the Queen, who doesn't die in the literal sense), so I don't think it's a comparable situation to killing off a series regular or even a books-only character who has been around for a while. Besides which, Nave had a target on her from the moment she was introduced; giving her history all at once through info-dumping instead of developing it gradually strongly suggested a character who wouldn't survive the story.

I understand what you're saying. I remember when the news came out for Death in Winter about Beverly Crusher and how upset that they thought she had been killed in that book.I bought the book to read to find out what happened to her.When it's a main character from the series of course it's a different matter entirely.Same thing happened I was really upset when Trip was killed off in These are the voyages. Thank goodness for Margaret Clark & Andy mangles& Micheal Martin for how matters with Trip's story and the Enterprise crew were dealt with in The Good that Men do. 
Well, the space inside the Gum Nebula is bigger than the entire Federation and all its neighbors put together (at least in Star Charts terms), and it's got lots of astronomical features within it, so my idea in choosing it was that it was a region that could keep a ship (heck, a fleet of ships) busy for decades. But I guess it was up to Marco and subsequent authors to decide whether they wanted to follow up on that.
I'm honestly not sure where they are in SoD. There's a reference to the Occultus Ora region being "in the lee of the Gum Nebula," but that would mean in a region that's sheltered from the wind by the Gum Nebula, and I'm not sure what wind is being referred to there. The main "wind" in the region is the heat and radiation from the Vela OB2 star formation region that's blowing the bubble of the nebula outward in all directions.

Ok, thanks. The reason I asked is because I was updated the entry for Titan on Memory Beta, but I was sure if I should say it's mission was to explore the Beta Quadrant or Gum Nebula. In the end I just said it was exploring the Beta Quadrant and that it's first stop was the GN.
For what it's worth, I simply assumed the ship was still in the Gum Nebula. By "lee" could it mean that the Occultus Ora was in a region of the Gum that was somehow sheltered from the heat and radiation from Vela OB2?
Works for me. I just thought it was pretty.

I finished this book last night, bought it on a whim at the airport a few weeks back. I've not read much post nemisis fiction (in fact I believe this is my first) and I have to say I really really enjoyed it! I really liked the ending, very bittersweet I thought, the only thing that confused me a bit was trying to work out who all the people were in the final chapter, I think I got them all except for the two guys who were hiking.
Anyway now I've read SoD I'll defo be looking out for the next installment

Amazon.de finally managed to deliver my copy of the book. But don't expect any reviews before the hollidays... Afterwards, maybe... But I'm really looking forward to reading it...

Just finished reading it today. I haven't been this moved by a Trek novel in a long time, and I have to agree that the final chapter was great.
