Howdy!

What has the impact of "stoners" as fans of Star Trek?

I have never known anyone who smoked the ganja who did not like Star Trek. Probably the first fans of the series were children, teens and college kids (older people were watching "The Lucy Show" and that ilk).

An early red eyed fan of the original series was Al Gore, who loved TOS when it was first on.

The old, great TV show "Taxi" had Iggy, a burn out

I have been to Fantasy Cons and Star Trek conventions, and they are all full of potheads, partiers, "comic book guys" and yes, normal folks.

I think Trekkers who like to get baked either watch TOS or DS9.

We must be hanging out with different crowds. I've met a good number of pot smokers who love Star Trek, but I've met just as many who are either indifferent or don't like it at all. Usually, anyone I meet who's a really huge Star Trek fan and smokes pot is someone who got into Star Trek (and sci fi/fantasy/etc as a whole) first and then started smoking later.

As far as TOS goes, it does seem like there was a moderately strong drug culture surrounding it, especially in the 70's. I don't think it was a coincidence that Paramount tried to go for a 2001 sort of vibe with TMP.

I smoke and enjoy Star Trek, and it's even better doing both at once, however I resent the term "potheads" as it conjures up images of failing college students and unemployed losers who smoke 24/7. :(
