Sweet Dreams, Jean Simmons.

JanewayRulz!

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Jean Simmons may have played one of the most insidious "villians" in all of Star Trek, as a dedicated tunnel visioned Star Fleet Admiral, but her character set up my favorite Captain Picard moment in 7 years and multiple movies.

SATIE: Tell me, Captain, have you completely recovered from your experience with the Borg?
PICARD: Yes, I have completely recovered.
SATIE: It must have been awful for you, actually becoming one of them, being forced to use your vast knowledge of Starfleet operations to aid the Borg. Just how many of our ships were lost? Thirty nine? And a loss of life, I believe, measured at nearly eleven thousand. One wonders how you can sleep at night, having caused so much destruction. I question your actions, Captain. I question your choices. I question your loyalty.
PICARD: You know, there some words I've known since I was a school boy. With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably. Those words were uttered by Judge Aaron Satie as wisdom and warning. The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we're all damaged. I fear that today

Rest in peace, dear lady. Thankyou for your years of movie, stage and TV work.

RIP Jean Simmons

Jean Simmons, who after appearing in classics Hollywood films like Guys and Dolls and the original Spartacus appeared as Admiral Satie in the TNG episode The Drumhead, has died at the age of 80.

I know the name won't mean much to many of today's generation, but back then I thought it was quite cool that they were able to score a big league Hollywood actress to do a guest shot on TNG.

Re: RIP Jean Simmons

:( Sad now. She was class personified.

Agreed. Terrific actress. She really lent class to the ep The Drumhead, which had one of the best meltdowns in the series. "I've brought down bigger men than you, Picard!"

RIP. A great guest star in TNG, and some really great other roles earlier in her career.

Jean Simmons (Admiral Satie) has died.

I didn't see this in the Next Generation forum, but I've read that Jean Simmons, who played the McCarthyist Admiral Satie in "Drumhead" has died. You can see the main page of Memory Alpha for more details

Re: Jean Simmons (Admiral Satie) has died.

She must have been a damn good actress because I really hated that character, and it takes a lot for me to buy into things that much. I didn't see anything else she did, but it might be worth taking a look. God rest her.

I agree I really didn't care for the character she portrayed in Drumhead, but it was a great episode.
R.I.P. Miss Simmons

To think this episode, a highlight of season four, was written to save money. What was originally supposed to be a studio-requested clip show a la "Shades of Gray" became a fan favorite. And Jean Simmons opposite Patrick Stewart... what more could you want?

I did think it was unnecessary however for Jean to do this during her confrontation with Picard.

She had a pretty major role in the miniseries "The Thorn Birds," which I HIGHLY recommend.

A great actress, RIP.

And she was a strong and lovely presence as Spartacus' wife.

I can't say she showed her acting chops much in the 1990 Dark Shadows revival, but then, who did? :D
