SW: Revenge of the Sith (Did Obi-Wan know?)

Gryffindorian

I've often wondered about this, and it hasn't been made clear to me ...

In SWIII: Revenge of the Sith, did Obi-Wan Kenobi know about Anakin Skywalker and Senator Amidala's love affair/relationship? Did Obi-Wan know that Padmé was carrying Anakin's babies in her womb?

My assumption is that Obi-Wan didn't know about the love affair until he confronted Padmé to find his whereabouts. Nothing about the Clone Wars cartoons or the currently running 3D animated series seems to indicate that Obi-Wan knows Anakin and Padmé are married (with little ones along the way).

Besides, if Obi-Wan had known, I guess he would've mentioned something to Anakin to this effect.

Please enlighten me.

I think Obi-Wan had his suspicions, but they were never truly confirmed until his conversation with Padmé on Coruscant, when he tried to get her to tell him where to find Anakin.

I think Obi-Wan basically decided to look the other way. He had his suspicions but decided not to press the matter since he loved Anakin. It's not as if he were really asking Padme "Is Anakin the father?" He already knew. You can tell by how Obi-Wan says what he says to her.

I think Anakin removed any doubt when he was arguing with Obiwan in the transport about rescuing Padme after she fell out in Attack of the Clones.

I don't remember if I assumed this or if it was in one of the novels, but my understanding was that Obi-Wan knew Anakin was boffing her but turned a blind eye because he was his good friend a great war hero and why run him through the ringer for it?

I figured based on the movie and other EU stuff that, while people may not know the full extent (marriage with kid on the way), Anakin and Padme being together was an "open secret."

Actually I think in the season finale of the CGI-Clone Wars toon Obi makes a sly reference to Anakin's relationship to Padme.

If Obi-Wan knew, he kept it quiet and that's what I'd expect from him given the relationship between him and Anakin at the start of the film. Anakin was his best friend, not just his former Padawan.

I realize that in SWII AotC, Obi-Wan had specifically talked to Ani about the Jedi being forbidden to have relationships or romantic attachments. But Ani and Padme went and got married, in secret anyway. So beginning with Clones cartoons through the new Clones animated series, the two would've been having romantic interludes under everyone's nose. It also makes me wonder if other people like Palpatine, the other senators, the Jedi Council knew about the relationship or suspected it during that time. And as Padme's pregnancy became more obvious, one couldn't help wonder who the father was. She wasn't exactly a slutty senator tha just got knocked up by some random guy. Anakin would be the obvious candidate.

Palpatine likely knew, I always assumed he was the one sending Anakin those visions of Padme dying to get Anakin to do what he wanted.

Actually, this was one of the things that irritated me about the film: Obi Wan's should have known, or have had suspicions, but there is no hint of this at all during the film.

When it's revealed that Anakin is the father to him, he could have, well, "acted" as if either he had known all along or his suspicions were confirmed. But I don't think the movie was thought out enough.

Like with most issues I take with the movie, I blame Lucas.

Obi-Wan knew.

And was jealous because he wanted Padme.

Which is why he left Anakin to be burned alive instead of taking a couple of steps down there and finishing him off, like a real friend would.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :)

That's exactly how I felt about the relationship issue. It could've been handled so much better. It was almost begging the question. It's not like Obi-Wan had to ask, "Padmé, you're pregnant. Congratulations! Who's the father? Oh, never mind. Don't answer that question." He could've said something like, "I realize there's something going on between you and Anakin" or something to that effect. Obi-Wan had to have known or suspected it, but he never "confronted" Anakin or Padmé about the issue.

I agree: he knew something was up, and he looked the other way. Obi-wan's a sharp cookie, and he knew there was nothing he could do but throw shit at the fan.

I am fairly certain that Obi-wan did know of the relationship that Anakin was having but he turned a blind eye to it because if he really had acknowledged it then he would have had to report it and he knew that there were members of the Jedi Council that looked at Anakin with suspicion already (e.g. Windu). If they had found out about Padme, it would have confirmed things for them.

I do not think the other members of the Jedi Council or other Jedi knew about the relationship between Anakin and Padme. Their attention was no doubt focused elsewhere.

Yeah, you can be certain that Palpatine knew. He specifically took advantage of it.

Also in the movie when Obi sees Padme is pregnant doesn't he immediately say "it's Anakin's, isn't it?"

Exactly. Obi-Wan's affection for Anakin got the better of him. Anakin and he had fought together; Anakin had saved his life. Obi-Wan didn't want to press the issue and turn him in to the council. Of course he knew.

Obi-Wan knew. He just chose to turn a blind eye about the whole "attachment" issue. There was a deleted scene that was referenced in the movie where Obi-Wan visits Padme and Obi-Wan says something to the affect that he knows how much Anakin cares about Padme. He also mentions considering Padme a friend so in a way, he's protecting both.
