"Suspicions" question...why Beverly?

Gotham Central

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Does anyone else think that Suspicions was an odd Beverly centered episode? The focus of the episode was a scientist engaged in research on shielding and warp fields. Why would Beverly be interested in the scientist at the center of the story.

It would have made more sense for Geordi or Data to be the focus of the story or for the central mystery to be aboue medicine or biology.

Beverly is more a researcher than Data or Geordi.

It would have made more sense for one of the ship's science officers to be involved but none of them were main cast.

Because she's a bleeding heart. She'll throw herself in front of any underdog bus, & a Ferengi scientist fit the bill

Data could only be given a cause to be passionate about if it involved artificial life. I'm not saying it made sense, but that's just how they worked it. What's even worse is that Geordi almost never even had a cause to be passionate about, unless it involved him personally

But yeah, it would have been more appropriate for it to be a medical concept behind the episode. A Ferengi doctor with groundbreaking research would have been even more interesting

A person can be interested in more than one thing. How much more bland would it have been if Beverly was only ever given medical stories?

I think the problem was that she very rarely ever got any though, and almost none that featured her alone like Suspicions did

Ethics is the closest she ever got, & she shared that with Worf

List of Beverly's solo episodes

The High Ground - About a terrorist group
Transfigurations - About a love affair with an alien who she's doctoring
Remember Me - About Wesley's botched experiment
Suspicions - about a Ferengi engineer
Sub Rosa - About a ghost/alien

So actually, Transfigurations was the only episode of hers that centered around medicine & her doctoring, and it ended up having to have a love affair in it

Pulaski was there for one season & got Unnatural Selection. Face it, Bev could've used some episodes about how she was a Doctor, despite the fact that she was featured in that capacity ad nauseam in ensemble situations

IA. And there's evidence scattered throughout the show that Beverly likes to branch out. There's her science experiments, the fact she'd rather be a CMO who gets to explore space than be head of Starfleet Medical, taking command shifts because she wants to 'stretch herself a little'. She tells Rasmussen that she's in Starfleet because of her curiosity.

Beverly seems the type who always has projects on the go that are unrelated to her vocation. (Which may explain her failure to ever find the time to look up how many hearts Klingons have ;))

Good list. But you're forgetting about "The Host" and "Cause and Effect", which is very much a Beverly-centric episode.

The thing is Beverly is never shown having an interest in engineering. Shield technology and shuttle piloting seemed well beyond anything that she had ever shown an interest in.

Honestly It might have been interesting to have Dr. Crushed show herself to be something of a jack of all trades with a wide array of interests. Yet we never really see that.

You want her to be shown to be into many and varied things, but you have a problem with an episode that shows her interest in a new field?

She's into dancing, medicine, new technologies, exploring, theater, cybernetics, botany, poker, and even a little Klingon martial arts.

My question about Suspicions was actually about how jobril got all the way from the morgue to the shuttle craft without anyone seeing him. He's humongous, green, and supposed to be dead.

It was her turn for an episode :p

That's what I tend to think, too. On the other hand, I like that this is a Beverly episode. This is because it's an episode with a female lead that has absolutely nothing to do with her being a woman or womanly. OTOH, as an episode, this one leaves me cold. I'm not a fan of Beverly and I found the ep boring! (No pleasing some people, I know! LOL!)

I LOVE Bev! She is absolutely, my favourite doctor and I'm really surprised that more wasn't done with her - especially in the movies. She's a wonderful character.

Oh yeah, I forgot about The Host Another one where they had to throw in a love affair. Couldn't the woman practice medicine in her own episode without a romance?

I tend to discount Cause & Effect. It angle's toward her in the first half, but it leans toward Data later on. Sort of how Legacy angles toward Data, but it's not really his episode
