Survivor 23: South Pacific (Discussion)

Yeah, I assume Brendan either cheated on his wife or has a history of stalking (possibly rape), and he now blames all good-looking women (casting them in the role of the devil) for his personal failings.

Okay, can nobody keep a secret on this show? Lil' Hantz made it all of three episodes before spilling the beans, and Ozzie lasted exactly one ep before admitting he had the immunity idol. I realize that they're all cut off from their friends and family and have nobody else to talk to (except the cameraman), but . . . geez!

Sadly, I can't say I like many of the players this year! They are all either irritating or boring. The only one I can really say I'm rooting for so far is Cochrane, and I doubt he'll last long anyway. I liked Ozzy the first season that he was on, and that started to fade his second time around. Now I really don't like him at all. When you think about it, he's really rather lazy around camp, both in terms of the work they do and strategically. He does get points for finding the idol, but I feel like he's making the same mistakes he has in the past. That is, he is making his choices about who is in his alliance based solely on physical appearances. It is true that Cochrane has done just fine in the challenges, he hasn't brought the team down, but Ozzy still sees him as weak and therefore useless to him. Also, I think Ozzy is developing a bit of a superiority complex...he enjoys sitting back and doing nothing while everyone else strategizes and makes the decisions. It's working great for him now, but soon those decisions will be against him, not for him...

I think Ozzie is letting his ego get in the way of strategy. Take that elimination challenge, for example. He should have been one of the people spinning the rope back and forth. Instead, he kept racing out there even though his speed was dependent upon the speed of the rope spinners and their ability to pull players back to the beach. Ozzie should have taken a back seat and let lighter players run up front (as it's easier to pull lighter players back to the beach).

This season seems to have even more of a high school clique developing among one of the tribes than usual. Ozzy and his alliance of beautiful 20-somethings versus the nerdy kid and older people.

So far this season has gotten off to a pretty good start. Other than Brandon, who just bugs me, there really isn't anyone I really don't like, but at the same time there isn't anyone I really like.

Brandon is crazy. Like bride who refuses to take off her wedding dress after her husband left her at the alter 3 years prior crazy.

The weakest part about him is that he does something stupid, beats himself up over it, apologizes to god or whatever, then goes and does something stupid right all over again. He doesn't learn and thinks his deplorable behaviour is ok because he can reconcile with god. He thinks he's all christian and pure but he's the biggest douchebag out there.

Kind of makes you think Matt from last season and his god shit weren't all that bad.

I don't think Ozzy should have told anyone just yet that he has the idol. He's going to be blindsided holding the idol, again. You heard it here first.

I love how Papa Bear runs in to the forest and then acording to one of the chicks comes back 5 minutes later pretending he has the idol. Way to go, detective.

SO far so good though, no real complaints from me.

Brandon REALLY creeps me out.

Why, what's that in the bushes, Mikayla?

Yeah, Brandon is super creepy, and flaky as all hell. The smart thing for Coach and his alliance would be to get rid of the most unstable element (Brandon) right now before he screws something up. Edna's already loyal to Coach, she can replace Brandon as the fifth member of the alliance.

I also think Ozzy should have kept the idol a secret. By telling people about it you put a huge target on your back.

Yeah, I'm with you guys on this one. Whenever someone tells another person they have the idol, it rarely ever seems to stay secret for long. And the more people that know the more danger you're in.

Well, Ozzy has never been the smartest player on the island in any of the seasons he played in, and I guess when you have so much idle time, it's difficult to avoid talking about things you think could be interesting to others.

Ok have to make some points here.

Lazy at camp? Seriously? First we have seen little actually activity on this teams camp life (one person getting water), two brief scenes of fishing, A a couple brief flashes of putting shelter together, and some coconuts.

We have seen far, far, far more of the other teams (work ethic).

But out of Ozzy's team. We know they have a lot of food, apply supply of coconuts, fish, and lots of bananas.

OK, who did we see catching fish? Well we saw two guys in the boat, and the one actually out fishing was...Ozzy. Next episode, we see someone bringing in fish, who was it? Ozzy.

We see teams cutting up coconuts, but do we ever see them getting the coconuts (ie are they just out on the beach, on the floor of the juggle or still up in trees). We don't know the only person we see bring coconuts into camp is...Ozzy (don't know if he climbed for them or just gathered them from the ground).

When the shelter is being built who is carrying the branches the braid for roughing. well one of them is Ozzy. In fact there is only one scene where any one is doing camp chores and we don't see Ozzy doing anything and that is one time we see Papa bear making a water run.

There is nothing showing he is lazy except for times when the rest of the camp is also out relaxing.

As for Cochrane (he's done ok in challenges, has he brought the team down or slowed them down? Yes in two different challenges, the Pole/ puzzle task (where he and Dawn are what slow that part of the task down, they rest of the team make up for it) and the obstacle part of the coconut basketball challenge. He was slowest over the wall, he was bring up the rear before the could progress to cutting the rope releasing the coconuts. While he wasn't the worst person on that task (they got rid of the worse) he was very likely the next largest factor.

So yeah his physicality has had an impact on the team.

I do like that he is making an honest effort to do his share though (I like that a lot, even if he isn't any good at it you get a lot of points for effort in my book).

Ozzy is also being a lot more social (first season he wasn't much at all, second he was very much in a very tight (he thought) group of four), here he has tried to be a lot more open with a slightly larger group.

As for being Cocky, he is supposed to be a bit in real life over the survival aspects of this game, and for good reason. If I was literally stranded on an Island and I had my choice of one survivor to try and literally survive with, I would pick Ozzy. Because based on the seasons we have seen, and the reports from fellow contestants he is one of the best (if not the best) at the real survivor aspects of the game.

His weakness has always been his social ability.

The "lazy" thing might have come from Ozzy not wanting to build a shelter on the first day but instead to go splashing about in the ocean.

I don't really understand Coach's thinking. What more does a woman have to do to prove her worth in challenges than what Stacy did? Is she more trustworthy than Edna? I don't know, but getting rid of Stacy clearly won't make the tribe stronger.

Oh my god, who thought up that challenge? That was fucking disgusting.

If I were on the island, I would have taken a big bite and swallowed every time before carrying some to the basket, and it looks like many of players did just that too.

That brought a whole new meaning to "pulled pork."

The challenge itself wasn't disgusting, entirely, but what was disgusting -to me- was them getting to keep the meat and eat it afterwards. After it had been ripped out by various mouths, slobbered on and everything. Yeah, no thanks.

And that one dude reminds me of Andy Dick.

Yeah, that really shows how hungry they must be. I mean, I'm not a picky eater or anything, but the amount of saliva in that basket would've really turned me off. Maybe in a soup after boiling it for a couple hours... ;)

And I'm starting to like Jim, I think my initial assessment of him as a douchebag might have been wrong, he seems like an alright guy.
