Surprising one's self

Edinburgh

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Recently i was in the position of talking to distant family members and there friends. Making polite chat with star trek voyager playing in the background. There was a little lull in the conversation and at that point the family member pipes up with,

" What the hell's he meant to be " :cardie:

"Oh! he's a hirogen. a species of hunter, worriers who track down and kill their prey. Played by Tony Todd, you know, Candyman. :techman:

Oh! and that's species 8472 and that thing comes from fluidic space. They had a battle with the Borg :borg: and kicked their ass but that one got left behind. Now that Hirogen is hunting it.

Oh! and that's the Dr, He's a hologram."

I turn and look at my (want to be more) distant family and people who will never be my friends.

Anyone else been in the same situation ?

Yeah, when I watched an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and my family was watching it with me. They made nasty comments about Worf as well.

My mom came in my room with Voyager on my TV, and she stood and looked at it for a minute. It was a Neelix scene. Finally she says "Well, he looks like a friendly character." Very observant.

And that is the beginning and end of my mom's knowledge of Star Trek (correction: actually she knows that the young girl on Reba is Naomi Wildman on Voyager).

My family has known I'm a Trekkie for a long time and they just sort of roll thier eyes whenever the subject comes up. I put up with thier pecadilloes, they put up with mine!

Being the only Trek fan in my family I put up with it every time the subject arises. I never bring it up myself, since I know there will be no interest.
The best/worst reaction was from my uncle who saw a bunch of Klingons on an episode of TNG and remarked: "He's got a vagina on his head!"

However, since my father-in-law and brothers-in-law are all Trek/sci-fi fans, there's at least some comraderie for me now.

My mom loved the new movie because "it didn't have so many aliens all over the place."

This is also the same woman that said during Revenge of the Sith: "More talking? This is the worst one yet!".

But don't think poorly of her, she did watch TOS first run as a teen and mildly enjoyed it. Pretty sure it was my folks taking me to see the first movie at the age of 5 that set me on my long and winding path of Trekkie-ness.

My entire family were Trekkies.

So my guess is my mom, dad, uncle, grandmother and grandfather are having a great time getting all their Star Trek questions answered by Gene Roddenberry himself.

A few weeks back in work the subject of Man From Atlantis came up. I shocked everyone present (including me) by reciting cast and credits. :( Luckily real work soon intervened and no one's mentioned it since. The last time that happened was about 4 years ago with new BSG.

My father was the one who first got me into The Next Generation. I don't think he ever imagined how much of an obsessive Trekkie I would become.

My half-brother is a casual fan (despite the best efforts of my step-mother, who tried to force him to watch nothing but PBS).

Unfortunately, my grandparents were never fans. My mother prefers Jane Austen adaptations. My sister constantly teases me for being a nerd, yet she keeps dating them herself. (Heck, she even dated a member of the 501st Stormtrooper Legion for a while.)

Most of the relatives on my mother's side of the family have almost no common interests with me. Occasionally, we can talk NCAA football but most of the time all they care about is mountain biking, rock climbing, & drinking wine. However, last time my grandfather's half-brother's step-son was in town, we hung out and watched First Contact & "Civil Defense." He was a cool guy. (Unfortunately, we're not supposed to talk about him at family gatherings any more and no one will tell me why.:()

My college roommate was exposed to Star Trek through me, but his conclusions ran the gamut from thinking that FC is a great movie, Shatner is ridiculous in TWOK, and Enterprise is "that show with the terrible haircuts." (The only ep he ever watched fully was one from the 4th season Vulcan trilogy .)

Most of my family has zero interest in Trek, but my dad knows all the best TOS episodes, and still thinks fondly of TNG's "The Inner Light." I can work with that.

For decades my brother teased me about being a 'trekkie', even though I made a good living at it for awhile. My how times have changed: he loves the new Star Trek movie and never misses an episode of Big Bang Theory!

One of my good friends is a die-hard Star Wars fan. His wife & I have also successfully converted him into a die-hard Doctor Who fan and an interested Stargate fan. However, the Trekkie conversion has been far less successful. He doesn't like The Wrath of Khan. Actually, his favorite Star Trek movie is Generations. He finds the whole Nexus concept intriguing.

Another one of my friends is a casual viewer sometimes. I think Enterprise was the only series she watched with any regularity. Just to bug me, whenever we watched an Original Series movie together, whenever Dr. McCoy would say something funny, she would smile, look at me, and say, "He's like a rip-off of Trip.":p
