Suricata's MSDs

SuricataFX

Lieutenant Junior Grade
Red Shirt
Hey all,

Loooog time occasional lurker, but I've never really been involved in the community here before,so I decided to try and fix that!

it seems appropriate for my first post to be some of the MSD's I've worked on over the years. Some of these were created specifically for Star Trek Online, others were just passion projects.*

*These are LARGE files, I'm fine with people printing/sharing them for personal use, but PLEASE remember to give me credit when doing so!

USS Voyager

This MSD was created to show what the USS Voyager would of looked like after her journey home from the Delta Quadrant. Additions include:

  • Corrected profile of ship to match the CGI ship introduced in Season 4
  • Extending the shuttlebay (to make space for the Delta Flyer)
  • Added Kes' Hydroponics lab
  • Adjusted Cargo bay to show Borg Alcoves
  • Correct Aerowing shuttel profile added
  • Hazard Ops of 'Elite Force' added.

USS Defiant

The Defiant is one of my favorite ships, so when STO was doing a DS9 themed expansion, I couldn't not make this MSD! This ship has a big history regarding ship size and layout. So I knew there would be a lot of work involved, even though it's a relatively small ship. I used the set plans to draw the rooms, and the DS9 technical manual for the rooms we didn't see.

To get all of the rooms to fit in and align properly, the ships length came in at around 110m. Deck 5 would technically be the lower nacelle housing, which would mostly just contain some of the Pulse Phase equipment and access to the warp coils. The most notable difference on this MSD will be the corrected profile of the ship and the inclusion of the dual Quantum torpedo launchers. I also shuffled the landing gear and shuttle pod bays to match the external panels. I also added the Brig from 'Valiant' to deck 4.

USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-D

The infamous Enterprise-D MSD from Engineering. I created this as a texture for the Galaxy class map we added to Star Trek Online. Since this is such a hugely iconic MSD, I opted to keep it in the TNG style and not clutter it with rooms. There are a few minor shape corrections and the colors have been adjusted to match STO's TNG palette, but for the most part, this is a fairly accurate reproduction of what was seen in the show.

USS Enterprise, NCC -1701-E

Probably the most intense MSD I've created to date, an insane amount of work went into this beast! The original MSD for the Enterprise-E was completely the wrong shape (most likely due to the sets been created whilst the physical model was not yet finalized). This is the Nemesis version of the ship, the profile was created using the CGI model from the film. I used the set plans from the films, TNG and Voyager to create most of the rooms. when I create my MSD's I work to scale in illustrator to ensure that everything fits properly, this can sometimes mean there is a little variance from the MSD's seen in the shows.

I also used concept Art, games (like Elite Force 2) and the SOTL calendar to flesh out the interior of the ship. This one has a huge amount of Easter eggs in it also.

These are all fantastic. Love the little comedy callouts in the D MSD. I always forget they made some pretty huge changes in the Big E in the last two films. Love seeing how you tackled that.

Cool to see you here! I followed your stuff since the old blog.

These are amazing! They clearly took a lot of dedication to do, particularly if you corrected them. I never knew the Enterprise-E was so different between movies! I thought only the pylons, 'neck' and weapons were changed.

A familiar face! Seeing a fair amount from Scifi meshes here :)

Yeah, I put a fair amount of time into these, when you factor in all of the research, the Defiant took a few weeks to do, the Enterprise-E took 2 months! (Evenings and weekends when not at work).

The difference between the Nemesis and Insurrection ship is subtle to most people, but when making an MSD, they are pretty major! You can see the outline differences below that show the variance. Whilst most people noticed the pylons and neck, you can very clearly see the saucer changed profile, the engines also became slightly more streamlined. She also gained 1 deck!

For those interested, here is the comparison between the official Enterprise MSD that was at the back of the bridge, and the updated one I created, which shows just how off the profile was! Most likely the MSD was created whilst the design of the ship was still not finalized, which is not uncommon with motion pictures where set construction and filming may occur before work on visual effects designs are finalized!

The official length of the Enterprise-E is 685m, on the original MSD it showed Jeffories tubes between the decks, however, it meant the space left for the main part of the deck was less than 2m tall on the MSD, the people on the original MSD are actually under 1.5m tall :P I created my MSD with a full deck height of 3.1m, with a 0.5m space between decks for cable runs and the like.

Very cool, especially the comparisons between Enterprise-E versions. I thought the only differences were the paint, nacelles and phaser/torpedo banks.:techman:

Dude... It's been a loooong time! So nice to still see you going strong :-D

Wow, another familiar face. Yeah, Don't think I've been on the old SCN forums for several years now, one of the downsides of social media becoming more prominent!

This thread delivers on so many levels! Thanks for sharing your beautiful artwork with all of us, @SuricataFX! It's appreciated. :)

Thanks, Glad to share it where it is appreciated (mostly among hardcore Trek fans! :P )

Hahaha, I just noticed the Tardis control room, these things are so packed with stuff!

Since the Enterprise-E was not work related, I added waaaay more Easter Eggs to it (around 50!). The only one I placed on the Defiant was I embedded the MSD into the Engineering room (with 4 layers), so it actually has an MSD, in an MSD in an MSD in an MSD :P

I accidentally hopped by a few weeks ago, but it's a bit dead over there. It'll always be my "awwww, this is where it all began" board though :-)

Yeah, it feels like a lifetime ago that I was there now! I still remember when a thread appeared there about maybe working together to make a replacement for an old website called Memory Alpha and updating it to a wiki page instead :P

Yeah, I always get a pang of nostalgic feelings when I realise MA was effectively set up at SCN...

Welcome! I too have seen your work elsewhere. The level of detail and color work are particularly impressive.

Glad you decided to stop lurking and share these with us. :)

Thanks, I think the advent of Facebook groups has made it hard to keep track of all the different places people post stuff on! I've used a lot of reference material posted on these boards to make these, so really was about time i tried to participate a little more!

Has there been any progress with your Discovery analysis for future MSD?
